I was reading the news when the hair in the back of my neck started to tingle. I looked twice to see if I was reading it right. There was someone suggesting the world needed to unite the political and economic aspects of every country, and under the aspicious of the United Nations, for the advancement of 'people centered' goals. I looked again at the headlines to make sure I was reading it correctly.....

"...Pope Proposes New Financial Order...
"...Pope Benedict XVI called for a new financial order with “real teeth” as Group of Eight leaders prepare to discuss ways out of the worst recession since World War II. “Profit is useful if it serves as a ...From profits to ethics: pope calls for a new political and financial world order...
"...This must be tackled, he said, by the creation of a global political authority and financial order based not just on the search for ever greater profits, but on ethics and a sense of the common good. The pontiff made the appeal in a 144-page encyclical – a reflection on doctrine that is the highest form of papal writing – three days before he was due to discuss the global downturn with Barack Obama.

"...Pope: encyclical, even globalization in need of a soul..Globalisation, which marks society today, is in need of a reaffirmation of ethical values, as well as “a personal and communal cultural orientation, open to transcendence" that is capable of "correcting its malfunctions." Moreover, in our age, “the State finds itself having to address the limitations to its sovereignty imposed by the new context of international trade and finance”. “This new context has altered the political power of States” (n. 24). But “as we take to heart the lessons of the current economic crisis, it seems more realistic to re-evaluate their role and their powers, which need to be prudently reviewed and remodelled”

"...Pope Benedict's long awaited encyclical calls for a radical rethinking of economics so that it is guided not simply by profits but by "an ethics which is people-centered."
...days before he is to meet with Pope Benedict XVI on his first trip to Italy, President Obama told FOX News that the Catholic Church's long tradition of social justice has had a "profound influence" on him. Obama told FOX News that he looks forward to reading the encyclical, a "circular letter" titled "Charity in Truth," published by the Vatican.

The encyclical -- set to be published on the eve of the G8 summit -- has been seen as a message from the pope to leaders of advanced nations who will convene in L'Aquila, Italy,on Wednesday.

The world united under economic, political and 'moral' aspects, a global political authority and financial order, a 'new world order', and I never thought it would happen in my lifetime....

The ancient Chinese proverb 'May you live in interesting times', often referred to euphemistically as the Chinese curse, comes to mind. It will indeed be interesting times to see how it all falls into place.

Psa 64:5 ...an evil matter: they commune of laying snares privily; they say, Who shall see them?

Psa 7:14 Behold, he travaileth with iniquity, and hath conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood. 15 He made a pit, and digged it, and is fallen into the ditch which he made. 16 His mischief (and his violent dealing) shall return upon his own head.

Psa 7:17 I will praise the LORD according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the LORD most high.

Rapid comes to mind

How rapid? Anyone knows? in days? months? 1 year? 2 years? 3 years? 4 years? 5 years?...????

For sure it's going to happen before our eyes. We are the last generation and we are going to go through, like never before in history, a time of atroce persecution. For sure we are facing some number of time? Do you think this is important to know? Would it matter to know if it's going to be a few days or a number of years yet? Also, the events that are coming? Like the Trumpets...Oh yes, they are already fulfilled right? And all the other prophecies in Revelation are also fulfilled. So all we are waiting for is the Sunday law to be pass? and then the plagues and we're home? Right?

Is there any need to be in the country? I mean if it's only going to be for a few months, then all we need to do is stock up our house with food and we'll be ok. Right? Is that the advice we will be sharing to those we will be giving the 3AM. For sure being in Christ is the ultimate preparation. However, we are the ones with the word of God, and Jesus did give us some details of events and timeline for our benefit.

Jesus said to us in Revelation 1:3 "Blessed [is] he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time [is] at hand."

I believe that it is very important for us to understand fully Daniel and Revelation as God had layed out what's ahead so to encourage us, to prepare us, and to be a light upon the others.

I agree with the first part of Elles post. How does this information make a difference in your life, outside of tickling your prophecy bone? Also, was it not so that believing they had it all figgured out was one of the main errors that was made around Jesus first comming? Jesus first comming took everyone save Jesus Himself with supprise. History is likely to repeat itself. (I said everyone and I meant everyone. Meaning I left no room in my statement for "everyone except me and my prophetically knowledgeble pals". Dont believe me? DOA is a reading suggestion.)

Yes, what should be our response to these type of events that are a precursor to the Time of Trouble.

How should this affect our daily lives and our Sabbath rest and worship?

I'm surprise this thread has died so quickly and not very popular. Anyway, here's a few more info about it.

What is our Church leaders saying about this? Anyone heard anything? Shouldn't they have known about this coming? Wasn't it there dury to have warn us? Didn't David Gates knew about this about 8 years ago and warning people already? How come our Leadership hasn't warned us yet? Why did we only here it from a lay person which he really couldn't elaborate much on it?

Quote:
A New World Order?
http://thepoliticaljungle.blogspot.com/2009/04/new-world-order.html
For years world leaders avoided using the term "New World Order" and the mainstream media pretended that it did not exist. But now all of that has changed, as world leaders at the G20 summit openly hailed the creation of a "New World Order" and the mainstream media around the world splashed headlines about a "New World Order" across their front pages.

So why this sudden change? Why are world leaders constantly discussing a "New World Order" now?

Nobody knows for certain, but this G20 summit is likely to go down as the moment when a lot of things changed. As the G20 summit drew to a close, U.K. Prime Minister Gordon Brown hailed the creation of a "new world order". The following YouTube clip contains footage of Gordon Brown openly announcing the creation of a "New World Order" at the G20 summit.....
The Independent, one of the U.K. most important newspapers, had this headline regarding the G20 summit: Barack Obama Hails The New World Order

The term is absolutely everywhere in the media now. In fact, if you just want to see this for yourself, just go to Google News and do a search for "New World Order" and see how many hundreds of search results come up.

Do these world leaders and media outlets know what they are saying?

Sure they do.

You would have to be living in a cave somewhere to not know what it means.

Did you also realize that the G20 summit was reportedly held at a location where there is an uncapped pyramid? If you do not know what an uncapped pyramid means, then you should look it up.

Even Time magazine recently came out with a major article entitled "New World Order" that advocates a one world financial system and a one world central bank.

It seems as though more than ever, both the media and government leaders around the world are advocating increased globalism as the answer to all of our economic problems.

But wasn't all of this globalism a big part of our problems?

Isn't it the elite central bankers of the world who played a big role in leading us into this crisis in the first place?

Apparently nobody seems to care about that.

At the recent World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland there was only talk of MORE globalism, more centralization and more power to world financial and government bodies.

In fact, the Financial Times described the World Economic Forum as a time when political leaders from around the world "renewed their globalisation vows in Davos".

So are we headed towards a one world financial system?

Are we headed towards a one world government?

Will we be hearing even more about the need for "a new world order" in the media?

Now why would the media and so many world leaders use the term "new world order" when they know it is going to upset so many people?

Why do they shove that term in our face when they know that we know what it means?

Do they want to purposely alarm us or do they think that nobody can stop them or do they just not care anymore?

After all, who would want a one world government, a one world financial system and a one world religion?

In any event, many world leaders are not even trying to hide the move towards a "new world order" anymore.

For example, in the stunning video clip from CNBC posted below, Henry Kissinger says that this current crisis is a great opportunity for Barack Obama to help bring about "a new world order".

Here is an excerpt from Kissinger's remarks.....

"he can give new impetus to American foreign policy ... I think that his task will be to develop an overall strategy for America in this period, when really a 'new world order' can be created. It's a great opportunity. It isn't such a crisis."

Meanwhile, a headline on CNN a while back declared exactly what these world leaders are up to as they endeavor to set up a new financial system: "G-20: Shaping a new world order".

The G-20 represents a huge chunk of the population of the earth. With its 19 nations plus the European Union, the G-20 represents 90% of the world's economy and 75% of its population.

In fact, many world leaders have been quite up front recently about their desire for a new world order.

Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister of the U.K., was very open about his desire for a new world order in recent remarks about the global economic crisis:

"The alliance between Britain and the US, and more broadly between Europe and the US, can and must provide leadership, not in order to make the rules ourselves, but to lead the global effort to build a stronger and more just international order.

"My message is that we must be internationalist not protectionist, interventionist not neutral, progressive not reactive and forward-looking not frozen by events. We can seize the moment and in doing so build a truly global society."

Even President Obama spoke of the need to move towards world government during his speech in Berlin when he described himself as a "citizen of the world"....

"Tonight, I speak to you not as a candidate for President, but as a citizen — a proud citizen of the United States, and a fellow citizen of the world."

But is this "new world order" a new idea?

Hardly.

It has been on the minds of world leaders for quite a long time.

The following are quotes by prominent leaders around the world from the past few decades telling us of their desires for world government, domination of the media, population control, the end of national sovereignty and a new world order:

“Some even believe we are part of a secret cabal working against the best interests of the United States, characterizing my family and me as ‘internationalists’ and of conspiring with others around the world to build a more integrated global political and economic structure - one world, if you will. If that is the charge, I stand guilty, and I am proud of it.”

-David Rockefeller (on page 405 of his autobiography 'Memoirs')

"We have before us the opportunity to forge for ourselves and for future generations a new world order, a world where the rule of law, not the rule of the jungle, governs the conduct of nations. When we are successful, and we will be, we have a real chance at this new world order, an order in which a credible United Nations can use its peacekeeping role to fulfill the promise and vision of the U.N.'s founders."

-President George Bush, 1991

"The New World Order will have to be built from the bottom up rather than from the top down...but in the end run around national sovereignty, eroding it piece by piece will accomplish much more than the old fashioned frontal assault."

-CFR member Richard Gardner, writing in the April l974 issue of the CFR's journal, Foreign Affairs.

"My country's history, Mr. President, tells us that it is possible to fashion unity while cherishing diversity, that common action is possible despite the variety of races, interests, and beliefs we see here in this chamber. Progress and peace and justice are attainable. So we say to all peoples and governments: Let us fashion together a new world order."

-Henry Kissinger, in an address before the General Assembly of the United Nations, October 1975

"Further global progress is now possible only through a quest for universal consensus in the movement towards a new world order."

-Mikhail Gorbachev, in an address at the United Nations (December 1988)

"To achieve world government, it is necessary to remove from the minds of men their individualism, loyalty to family traditions, national patriotism, and religious dogmas."

-Brock Adams, Director of the U.N. Health Organization

"A world government can intervene militarily in the internal affairs of any nation when it disapproves of their activities."

-Kofi Annan, U.N. Secretary General

"Our job is to give people not what they want, but what we decide they ought to have."

-Richard Salent, former president, CBS News

"The most merciful thing that the large family does to one of its infant members is to kill it."

-Margaret Sanger, outspoken atheist and socialist, founder of the Voluntary Parenthood League in 1914, and responsible for opening the first birth control clinic in the United States in New York City.

"We live in a dirty and dangerous world. There are some things the general public does not need to know and shouldn't. I believe democracy flourishes when the government can take legitimate steps to keep its secrets, and when the press can decide whether to print what it knows."

-Katherine Graham, Washington Post publisher and CFR member

"There is no such thing as an independent press in America, unless it is in the country towns. You know it and I know it. There is not one of you who dares to write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print."

-John Swinton, editor of the New York Tribune

"We are going to impose our agenda on the coverage by dealing with issues and subjects that we choose to deal with."

-Richard M. Cohen, Senior Producer of CBS political news

"We are moving toward a new world order, the world of communism. We shall never turn off that road."

-Mikhail Gorbachev 1987

"There does exist and has existed for a generation, an international . . . network which operates, to some extent, in the way the radical right believes the Communists act. In fact, this network, which we may identify as the Round Table Groups, has no aversion to cooperating with the Communists, or any other groups and frequently does so. I know of the operations of this network because I have studied it for twenty years and was permitted for two years, in the early 1960s, to examine its papers and secret records. I have no aversion to it or to most of its aims and have, for much of my life, been close to it and to many of its instruments. I have objected, both in the past and recently, to a few of its policies . . . but in general my chief difference of opinion is that it wishes to remain unknown, and I believe its role in history is significant enough to be known."

-Professor Carroll Quigley, in his book Tragedy and Hope, 1966

"A total world population of 250-300 million people, a 95% decline from present levels, would be ideal."

-Ted Turner, in an interview with Audubon magazine

“There is a single theme behind all our work–we must reduce population levels. Either governments do it our way, through nice clean methods, or they will get the kinds of mess that we have in El Salvador, or in Iran or in Beirut. Population is a political problem. Once population is out of control, it requires authoritarian government, even fascism, to reduce it…."

–Thomas Ferguson, State Department Office of Population Affairs

"We in the press like to say we're honest brokers of information and it's just not true. The press does have an agenda."

-Bernard Goldberg, as quoted by Harry Stein in the June 13-19, 1992 TV Guide.

"In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill…. But in designating them as the enemy, we fall into the trap of mistaking symptoms for causes. All these dangers are caused by human intervention and it is only through changed attitudes and behavior that they can be overcome. The real enemy, then, is humanity itself."

–Club of Rome, The First Global Revolution, 1991

"Let me control a peoples currency and I care not who makes their laws."

-Meyer Nathaniel Rothschild in a speech to a gathering of world bankers February 12, 1912

"In the next century, nations as we know it will be obsolete; all states will recognize a single, global authority. National sovereignty wasn't such a great idea after all."

-Strobe Talbot, President Clinton's Deputy Secretary of State, as quoted in Time, July 20th, l992.

"We must speak more clearly about sexuality, contraception, about abortion, about values that control population, because the ecological crisis, in short, is the population crisis. Cut the population by 90% and there aren't enough people left to do a great deal of ecological damage."

-Mikhail Gorbachev

"We are grateful to the Washington Post, The New York Times, Time Magazine and other great publications whose directors have attended our meetings and respected their promises of discretion for almost forty years. It would have been impossible for us to develop our plan for the world if we had been subjected to the lights of publicity during those years. But, the world is now more sophisticated and prepared to march towards a world government. The supranational sovereignty of an intellectual elite and world bankers is surely preferable to the national auto-determination practiced in past centuries."

-David Rockefeller, Baden-Baden, Germany 1991

"National Socialism will use its own revolution for establishing a new world order."

-Adolph Hitler during World War II

"Today, America would be outraged if U.N. troops entered Los Angeles to restore order. Tomorrow they will be grateful! This is especially true if they were told that there were an outside threat from beyond, whether real or promulgated, that threatened our very existence. It is then that all peoples of the world will plead to deliver them from this evil. The one thing every man fears is the unknown. When presented with this scenario, individual rights will be willingly relinquished for the guarantee of their well-being granted to them by the World Government."

-Dr. Henry Kissinger, Bilderberger Conference, Evians, France, 1991

"We are on the verge of a global transformation. All we need is the right major crisis and the nations will accept the New World Order."

-David Rockefeller

"The drive of the Rockefellers and their allies is to create a one-world government combining supercapitalism and Communism under the same tent, all under their control.... Do I mean conspiracy? Yes I do. I am convinced there is such a plot, international in scope, generations old in planning, and incredibly evil in intent."

-Congressman Larry P. McDonald, 1976, killed in the Korean Airlines 747 that was shot down by the Soviets

"No one will enter the New World Order unless he or she will make a pledge to worship Lucifer. No one will enter the New Age unless he will take a Luciferian Initiation."

-David Spangler, Director of Planetary Initiative, United Nations

Pope calls for a new world order

Barney Zwartz
July 9, 2009
http://www.smh.com.au/world/pope-calls-for-a-new-world-order-20090709-ddic.html
POPE Benedict XVI has proposed a new world political authority "with real teeth", possibly in place of the United Nations, to enforce an ethical financial order and end the global financial crisis.

Calling for more aid, a bigger role for trade unions and an economic system aimed at the common good as well as profit, the Pope said only a moral market could end the crisis and solve world poverty.

The proposals were in his long-awaited encyclical - the second-highest level of papal teaching - released in Rome yesterday morning Australian time, before the G8 leaders gathered in Italy to discuss the global crisis.

The conviction that the economy must be autonomous and shielded from moral influences had led humanity to abuse the economic process in a destructive way, the Pope said in the encyclical Caritas in Veritate (Love in Truth).

Such convictions had led to economic, social and political systems that "trample upon personal and social freedom" and could not deliver justice.

His suggested political authority would manage globalisation, revive economies, stop the crisis deepening, protect the environment and regulate worldwide migration. It would need to be universally recognised and given power to ensure compliance from all countries.

"In terms of secular politics, there's something for both left and right to cheer, and something for them to be grumpy about," said the respected Vatican commentator John Allen, observing that in 30,000 words the Pope never mentioned the word "capitalism".

He said liberals would applaud the Pope's call for robust government intervention and support for unions, while conservatives would appreciate his unyielding opposition to abortion, birth control and gay marriage, on economic as well as moral grounds.

The Pope, 82, in his third encyclical, wrote that when profit became the exclusive goal, without the common good as its ultimate end, it risked destroying wealth and creating poverty.

The world's wealth was growing but so was inequality. Aid to developing countries also provided economic benefits to donors, he said.

The Pope said the Church did not have technical solutions, but he offered a large number of specific policy suggestions.

One was that people should be allowed to decide how to allocate a portion of their taxes that would help welfare and aid. Another was that trade unions should also work for non-members, particularly workers in developing countries.

"As society becomes ever more globalised, it makes us neighbours but does not make us brothers," he said.

The NAM summit Calls for a ‘new economic order’ http://www.mmorning.com/ArticleC.asp?Article=7027&CategoryID=7

Cuba’s President Raul Castro, outgoing president of the movement, said in an address at the opening session: “We demand the establishment of a new international and economic structure that relies on the participation of all countries”, Castro said ahead of handing over the movement’s presidency to Egypt, which was hosting the fifteenth NAM summit conference at the Red Sea resort of Sharm al-Sheikh.
“There must be a new framework that doesn’t depend solely on the economic stability and the political decision of only one country”, the Cuban leader said, apparently referring to the United States.
The new system must give developing countries “preferential treatment”, he argued.
As the global crisis roiled world markets, erasing trillions of dollars in individual, corporate and government wealth, calls have mounted for greater market regulation and a shift from the use of the dollar as the main international reserve currency. Developing states have argued that their growth and stability is being undercut by a crisis in which they had no part in creating.
“This crisis, the worst in living memory, emanated from the advanced industrial economies, but the developing economies, the members of our movement, have been the hardest hit”, said Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Ban Ki-Moon, the UN secretary-general, who was attending the conference, said, “the economic crisis has revealed the need to improve the international financial architecture, so we may see the developing world and emerging powers gain more of a say in that realm”.
The call by Castro followed similar demands by the movement’s foreign ministers and senior officials, who stressed after four days of meetings at the conference that joint action was needed to ward off the global meltdown’s impact.
The summit’s draft declaration also called for the group to coordinate with China -- attending the summit as an observer -- to have their voices heard at financial institutions like the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
The movement, born in 1955 at a conference in Indonesia of countries allied with neither the US nor the Soviet Union, has lost much of its relevance with the end of the Cold War.
Nevertheless, it now has 118 members, and 50 heads of state or government were attending the summit at Sharm al-Sheikh.
In his address, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak recognized the “challenge” facing the movement’s founding principles, saying the group must work closely with developed states to address the world’s biggest problems, like terrorism and financial instability.

Meaning I left no room in my statement for "everyone except me and my prophetically knowledgeble pals". Dont believe me? DOA is a reading suggestion.)
i would hope that it is driving us to our knees and searching our hearts, that we are spending more time studying Christ and Him crucified than the things of this earth.

The Economist to Discuss Role of Brazil in New World Order
Written by Alexandre Rocha
Tuesday, 25 August 2009

The Economist. the British group who publishes a business magazine of the same name, is going to promote, on October 21st, The Economist's Brazil Summit, a conference in which existing business opportunities in the country will be among the key subject matters. The meeting will happen in São Paulo, in southeastern Brazil.

"We chose Brazil because of the potential that its market has shown. We believe that a large share of multinational companies tend to be based in the country, and nearly 50% of the 100 largest 'multi-Latin companies' are based in Brazil as well," said the Marketing and Communications director of The Economist Group for Latin America and the Caribbean, Adrian Garcia-Aranyos.

In addition to discussing opportunities in the country, the forum should tackle issues such as the shift in the international scenario after the financial crisis, the comparison between large emerging countries as engines for global growth, the role of Latin America in a new world order, Brazilian education, consolidation of the financial and capital markets in the country, and the perspectives for Brazil up to 2020.

According to the evaluation of the Economist Group, emerging markets remain an important source of growth for the world economy, and Brazil's resistance to the effects of the crisis will be put to the test this year and in the next year. "The opportunities in Brazil are there to be seized by those who are well-informed, up-to-date and ready to take action," says a release issued by the group.

China’s place in the new world order
Friday, 21st August 2009. 2:57pm

By: Paul Richardson.

One interpretation of the global economic crisis is that it marks an important moment in the shift of power from the US to China.

In his new book When China Rules the World (Penguin, £30.00) Martin Jacques argues that the fact that China is such a huge creditor and the US such a colossal debtor ‘reflects a deep shift in the economic balance of power between the two countries’. He sees China seeking to establish a new international reserve currency to replace the dollar and pushing to create an alternative to the IMF, a body in which China participates but which it has criticised in the past.

Jacques makes a case for seeing the rise of China as making a major break in world history. China, he claims, is not so much a nation as a civilisation. We must stop fooling ourselves that as China grows in wealth and military strength it will become more like us. Instead it will offer the world an alternative to the hitherto dominant Western culture. Confucian values and a Chinese model of capitalism will become increasingly important as countries in Asia and Africa turn their backs on the US and Europe.

Here's a section concerning North American :

North American Integration

The Canada-US Free Trade Agreement of 1989, was signed by President George HW Bush and Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. The FTA had devastating consequences for the people of Canada and the United States, while enriching the corporate and political elite. For example, GDP growth decreased, unemployment increased the most since the Great Depression,[6] and meanwhile, Brian Mulroney entered the corporate world, of which he now sits as a board member of Barrick Gold Corporation, as well as sitting on the International Advisory Board of the Council on Foreign Relations,[7] of which David Rockefeller remains on as Honorary Chairman.

In 1990, the private sector lobbying groups and think tanks began the promotion of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to expand the Canada-US Free Trade Agreement to include Mexico. NAFTA was signed by then Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, US President George H.W. Bush and Mexican President Carlos Salinas, in 1993, and went into effect in 1994. It was negotiated during a time in which Mexico was undergoing liberal economic reforms, so NAFTA had the effect of cementing those reforms in an “economic constitution for North America.”[8]

David Rockefeller played a role in the push for NAFTA. In 1965, he had founded the Council for Latin America (CLA), which, as he wrote in a 1966 article in Foreign Affairs, was to mobilize private enterprise throughout the hemisphere “to stimulate and support economic integration.” The CLA, David wrote, “provides an effective channel of cooperation between businessmen in the United States and their counterparts in the countries to the south. It also offers a means of continuing communication and consultation with the White House, the State Department and other agencies of our government.”[9]

The CLA later changed its name to the Council of the Americas (CoA) and maintains a very close relationship with the Americas Society, founded at the same time as the CLA, of which David Rockefeller remains to this day as Chairman of both organizations. As David wrote in his autobiography, Memoirs, in the lead up to NAFTA, the Council of the Americas sponsored a Forum of the Americas, which was attended by President George H.W. Bush, which resulted in the call for a “Western Hemisphere free trade area.”[10]

In 1993, David Rockefeller wrote an article for the Wall Street Journal, in the run up to NAFTA, in which he advocated for the signing of NAFTA as essential, describing it as a vital step on the road to fulfilling his life long work, and that, “Everything is in place -- after 500 years -- to build a true "new world" in the Western Hemisphere,” and further, that “I truly don't think that "criminal" would be too strong a word to describe an action on our part, such as rejecting Nafta, that would so seriously jeopardize all the good that has been done -- and remains to be done.”[11]

In 1994, Mexico entered into a financial crisis, often referred to as the Mexican peso crisis. The 1980s debt crisis, instigated by the Federal Reserve’s interest rate hikes on international loans, caused Mexico to default on its loans. The IMF had to enter the scene with its newly created Structural Adjustment Programs (SAPs) and reform Mexico’s economy along neoliberal economic policies.

In the late 1980s, “the United States accounted for 73 percent of Mexico’s foreign trade,”[12] and when NAFTA came into effect in 1994, it “immediately opened US and Canadian markets to 84 percent of Mexican exports.”[13] Mexico even became a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The peso crisis, which began at the end of 1994, with the ascension of Mexican President Zedillo, went into 1995, and the US organized a bailout worth $52 billion.[14] The bailout did not help the Mexican economy, as it was simply funneled into paying back loans to banks, primarily American banks, and the “crisis in 1995 was declared [by the IMF to be] over as soon as the banks and international lenders started to get repaid; but five years after the crisis, workers were just getting back to where they were beforehand.”[15]

In 2002, Robert Pastor, Director of the Center for North American Studies at the American University in Washington, D.C., prepared a report that he presented to the Trilateral Commission meeting of that same year. The report, A North American Community: A Modest Proposal to the Trilateral Commission, advocated a continuation of the policy of “deep integration” in North America, recommending, “a continental plan for infrastructure and transportation, a plan for harmonizing regulatory policies, a customs union, [and] a common currency.”[16] The report advocated the formation of a North American Community and Pastor wrote that, “a majority of the public in all three countries is prepared to join a larger North American country.”[17]

In 2003, prior to Paul Martin becoming Prime Minister of Canada, the Canadian Council of Chief Executives (CCCE), formerly the BCNI, published on their website, a press release in which they, “urged Paul Martin to take the lead in forging a new vision for North America.” Thomas d’Aquino, CEO of the Council, “urged that Mr. Martin champion the idea of a yearly summit of the leaders of Canada, Mexico and the United States in order to give common economic, social and security issues the priority they deserve in a continental, hemispheric and global context.” Among the signatories to this statement were all the Vice Chairmen of the CCCE, including David Emerson, who would go on to join Martin’s Cabinet.[18]

The CCCE then launched the North American Security and Prosperity Initiative, advocating “redefining borders, maximizing regulatory efficiencies, negotiation of a comprehensive resource security pact, reinvigorating the North American defence alliance, and creating a new institutional framework.”[19]

The Independent Task Force on the Future of North America was then launched in 2005, composed of an alliance and joint project between the CCCE in Canada, the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) in the United States, and the Mexican Council on Foreign Relations in Mexico. A press release was given on March 14, 2005, in which it said, “The chairs and vice-chairs of the Independent Task Force on the Future of North America today issued a statement calling for a North American economic and security community by 2010.”[20]

On March 23, 2005, a mere nine days following the Task Force press release, the leaders of Canada, the US, and Mexico, (Paul Martin, George W. Bush, and Vicente Fox, respectively), announced “the establishment of the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America,” which constituted a course of “action into a North American framework to confront security and economic challenges.”[21]

Within two months, the Independent Task Force on the Future of North America released their final report, Building a North American Community, proposing the continuation of “deep integration” into the formation of a North American Community, that “applauds the announced ‘Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America,’ but proposes a more ambitious vision of a new community by 2010 and specific recommendations on how to achieve it.”[22]

At the 2006 meeting of the SPP, the creation of a new group was announced, called the North American Competitiveness Council (NACC), made up of corporate leaders from all three countries who produce an annual report and advise the three governments on how to implement the SPP process of “deep integration”. The Secretariat in Canada is the CCCE, and the Secretariat of the group in the US is made up of the US Chamber of Commerce and the Council of the Americas.[23] The Council of the Americas was founded by David Rockefeller, of which he is still Honourary Chairman, and other board members include individuals from J.P. Morgan, Merck, McDonald’s, Ford, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, General Electric, Chevron, Shell, IBM, ConocoPhillips, Citigroup, Microsoft, Pfizer, Wal-Mart, Exxon, General Motors, Merrill Lynch, Credit Suisse and the US Department of Treasury.[24]

The process of integration is still underway, and the formation of a North American Community is not far off, only to be followed by a North American Union, modeled on the structure of the European Union, with talk of a North American currency being formed in the future,[25] which was even proposed by Canada’s former Governor of the Bank of Canada.[26]
