Fruit for Kids May Deter Cancer

Eating fruit freely in one's childhood may help protect against cancer later on in life. A research team looked at foods eaten by over 1,300 British families back in the 1930s, and than, 60 years later, tracked down nearly 4,000 men and women who had been children at the time. The folks who had partaken of the most fruit as youngsters enjoyed a reduced risk of cancer development as adults. --J. Epidemiol. Community Health 2003;57:218-25.

Diet and Physical Activity Fight Breast Cancer

Up to a third of breast cancer cases in Western countries could be avoided if women ate less and exercised more, researchers at a conference said recently, renewing a sensitive debate about how lifestyle factors affect the disease.

Better treatments, early diagnosis and mammograms screenings have dramatically slowed breast cancer, but experts said the focus should now shift to changing behaviors like diet and physical activity. "What can be achieved with screening has been achieved. We can't do much more," Carlo La Vecchia, head of epidemiology at the University of Milan, said in an interview. "It's time to move on to other things."

La Vecchia spoke at a European breast cancer conference in Baracelona in March of 2010. He cited figures from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, which estimates that 25 to 30% of breast cancer cases could be avoided if women were thinner and exercised more.

His comments are in line with recent health advice that lifestyle changes in areas such as smoking, diet, exercise and sun exposure can play a significant role in risk for several cancers.

Dr. Michelle Holmes of Harvard University, who has studied cancer and lifestyle factors, said people might wrongly think their chances of getting cancer depend more on their genes than their lifestyle. "The genes have been there for thousands of years, but if cancer rates are changing in a lifetime, that doesn't have much to do with genes," she noted.

Breast cancer is a most common cancer in women. In Europe, there were about 421,000 new cases and nearly 90,000 deaths in 2008, the latest available figures. The U.S. last year saw more than 190,000 new cases with 40,000 deaths. (Don't have the figures for Canada).

A woman's lifetime chance of developing breast cancer is about one in 8. Obese women are up to 60% more likely to develop any cancer than normal-weight women, according to a 2006 study by British researchers. Many breaest cancers are fueled by estrogen, a hormone produced in fat tissue. So experts suspect that the fatter a woman is the more estrogen she's likely to produce which could in turn fuel breast cancer. Even in slim women, experts believe exercise can help reduce the cancer risk. --The Press-Enterprise, March 26, 2010.

Comment: Lifestyle factors involved in reducing the risk of various maladies have been discussed here for several years. Now, the powers that be are finding that this is indeed the case. Let's take heed for our health sake!

Pancreatic Cancer

Regularly downing two or more sweetened soft drinks a week raises your risk of pancreatic cancer 87%, reveals a large-scale study in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. Soda's high sugar content increases insulin levels, which may fuel tumor growth, explain researchers. --Woman's World, April 26, 2010.

Science just confirms the Spirit of Prophecy more all the time. All the evidence about Vitamin D...no wonder SUNSHINE is one of the eight laws of health!

Christ is waiting with longing desire for the manifestation of Himself in His church. When the character of Christ shall be perfectly reproduced in His people, then He will come to claim them as His own. {COL 69}

Calcium and Vitamin D: A Girl's Best Friend

Calcium and vitamin D help lower the risk of breast cancer, according to recent meta-analysis of 36 studies. Participants with the highest intake of calcium had a 19% decrease in breast cancer risk compared with women consuming the smallest amounts of the mineral.

Women with the highest levels of vitamin D had a 45% decrease in breast cancer risk compared to those with the lowest levels. Study authors conclude, "These results provide strong evidence that vitamin D and calcium have a chemopreventive effect against breast cancer." --Remedies, January 2010.

Hold the Fries to Keep Away Breast Cancer

A childhood diet rich in french fries could significantly increase the risk of breast cancer in adults. One study of more than 2,000 women found that each weekly serving of fries between the ages of 3 and 5 upped the risk of cancer by 27%.

"This study provides evidence that breast cancer may originate during the early phases of a woman's life and that eating habits during that phase may be important," warns Dr. Karin Michels of Harvard Medical School.

Comment: Other studies show that this information applies accross the board to one and all. And don't forget all the other preventive modalities that balance out the cancer preventive program.

Walk Away From CANCER

Much research shows that exercise helps reduce the risk of breast and other cancers. Now, new findings from the Nurses' Health Study suggest that physical activity also lowers mortality among women with breast cancer, whether or not the disease is diagnosed early or after the cancer has spread.

"After my mastectomies I got right out there and started walking," says one 43 year-old cancer survivor, who now works out 4 hours a week. "Women with breast cancer have little to lose and much to gain from exercise," according to lead investigator Michelle D. Holmes, MD, DrPH, of Harvard Medical School.

The greatest benefit occurred among women who walked 3 to 5 hours a week at an average pace. While exercise is no substitute for medical treatment and may often be difficult for exhausted cancer patients, it is "something women can do that doesn't involve drugs and side effects," notes Debbie Saslow of the American Cancer Society. "Certainly no one is going to blame a woman for what she doesn't do," she adds. "But if you can [exercise], this [study] says you might benefit."

"Women don't have to run marathons," says Dr. Holmes, whose findings suggest that hormonal factors play a role. "The most logical explanation is that physical activity lowers hormone levels, and the lower hormone levels reduce the chance of [cancer] recurrence," she explains. --Source: JAMA, May 25, 2005, and www.voanews.com.

Comment: Any mention of cancer would not be complete without pointing out what the Spirit of Prophecy offers on the subject:

"Cancers, tumors and all inflammatory diseases are largely caused by meat eating. From the light God has given me, the prevalence of cancer and tumors is largely due to gross living on dead flesh." --Ellen White, Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 388.

Constipation and Breast Cancer

Physicians Nicholas L. Petrakis and Eileen B. King of the University of California, writing in Lancet "have found that women who have two or fewer bowel movements per week have 4 times the risk of breast disease (benign or malignant) as women who have one or more bowel movements per day."

Dr. Petrakis noted that 5% of women having one bowel movement per day would have abnormal dysplastic cells, while 10% of women having fewer than one bowel movement a day would have this abnormality and 20% of women have 2 or fewer bowel movements per week would show these dysplastic changes in cell character of breast fluid.

He continued by saying, "We found that 70% of the women we tested had exogenous (foreign) chemicals in the breast fluid. We don't know why they are there but we do know that the breast cells are in contact with the bloodstream, which will contain foreign substances absorbed into the circulation system from the skin, lungs, and the gastrointestinal tract." He also pointed toward dietary factors, noting that the bowels of people who eat meat contain greater amounts of mutagenic substances than do the bowels of those who abstain from eating meat. --Well Being Journal, January/February 2006.
