Here is an EGW quote from Sunday:“In many of the revivals which have occurred during the last half century, the same influences have been at work, to a greater or less degree, that will be manifest in the more extensive movements of the future. There is an emotional excitement, a mingling of the true with the false, that is well adapted to mislead. Yet none need be deceived. In the light of God’s word it is not difficult to determine the nature of these movements. Wherever men neglect the testimony of the Bible, turning away from those plain, soul-testing truths which require self-denial and renunciation of the world, there we may be sure that God’s blessing is not bestowed.”-Ellen G. White, The Great Controversy, p. 464.

I remember an ordained SDA Pastor say that there are those who don't have the truth but have the experience and we have the truth but lack the experience.
After reading the quote from Sunday in my previous post, which is better, having the truth but lacking the experience, or lacking the truth but having the experience? It is better "lacking the truth having the experience." This is what God told Jonah, "should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than 60,000 persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand?" They repented, did they not? Here is what Paul says of those who have not heard of God, "For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified." (Rom. 2:13) And Jesus Christ himself told the story of the two sons concluding about the chief priests and the elders of the people, "Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you." (Mark 21:28-32) As it is written, "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent" (Acts. 17:30) What shall we say then of those to whom truth has come, and treat it callously saying, "We belong and it is enough"? It is worse "having the truth but lacking the experience". .... ..

But isn't it the truth that will set us free? I thought you were talking about "having the truth but lacking the experience" meaning knowing about but not demonstrating the fruit of the spirit; as against the wonderful kindness of the "supposedly ignorant" Good Samaritan. Jesus acknowledged the latter. It is indeed better to lack the truth but have the experience. Even the quote you referenced about the truth setting you free, is part of a longer conversation Jesus had about those who had the truth but were not living it. Here is the full quote: " Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." (John 8:31-32) As an interesting side note ... Here Jesus uses "truth" as a clever personification of himself. Later on, he would explain it by saying, "If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed." (verse 36) In short, we will know Him, He will know us and He will save us. Quite a lot of people fail to appreciate the wonderful turns of phrases and sophisticated language of the Bible. They read it as if it were a historical drama. But, besides other things, it's a delightful puzzle. ... ..
