Ephesians
Paul spent three years in Ephesus, preaching Christ to Jews and Gentiles. Located at the western edge of Asia Minor, it was a port city. with a rich heritage of wealth, philosophy and Roman law. It boasted a library containing some 12,000 scrolls.
It had a magnificent temple! dedicated to the goddess Artemis, (Diana) a goddess of fertility and love. Into this city absorbed with the worship of the deity of fertility, entered Paul proclaiming "they are not gods which are made with hands (Acts 19:26) His message struck at the heart of Ephesus worship as well as Ephesus' economy, for people came from all over to this port city to honor Diana. Making images of Diana was lucrative business.
The conflict between Christ and Diana is an old one. And still strikes at hearts today. Not only of morality vs immorality. Also the appeal to the immediate as opposed to the eternal, to the emotional as opposed to the spiritual, to the pleasures of life as opposed to salvation from sin.
At Ephesus the two sides faced each other in confrontation.
It still confronts us today. The ever present challenge of choice: Diana or Jesus? The falsehoods of Satan offering immediate pleasure or benefits at cost of morals and integrity Or Jesus and His transforming message of salvation from sin.
EPHESUS VISITED
A few years ago I had the privilege of visiting Ephesus! A thriving sophisticated city in Paul's day. It was quite an elegant, luxurious city. Lots of baths, streets lined with oil lamps, running water from an elaborate system of aqueducts, and lots of art work, sculptures, painted pictures on walls, mosaic floors. Houses had many rooms around an open court in the center which often contained a fountain. Terraced houses built on the hills. Only about 20% has been excavated so far.
The real reward of visiting these "ruins" of an ancient great city, was sensing the reality of the place. The city's open town square area where Paul would have stood to preach, and where the people would have gathered to burn those books. The huge amphitheater where they dragged two of Paul's companions during their riot. The hill where once stood one of the "seven wonders of the world" the temple of Diana (Artemis) overlooking the city. Just imagine all the people streaming down that hill chanting, "Great is Diana" Quite a challenge for Paul to stand and preach in this city! It was definitely a pagan city, with more temples to gods besides the main one for Diana. It wasn't the most moral city.
A little ways apart from the main part of Ephesus is another house, (we did not go there, it's more of a Catholic shrine) but it supposedly was the house of John the apostle and Mary, the mother of Jesus, where they lived after Jerusalem was destroyed.

Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus 11?Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, 12?so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them.
13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, ?We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.? 14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so.
15 And the evil spirit answered and said, ?Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you??
16 And the man in whom was the evil spirit leaped on them, mastered all4 of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17 And this became known to all the residents of Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks. And fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled. 18 Also many of those who were now believers came, confessing and divulging their practices. 19 Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totaled fifty thousand pieces of silver. 20 So the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed.
Paul comes to Ephesus and as usual, he first began teaching in the Jewish synagogue. And, as usual, some at the synagogue angrily refused to accept that Jesus was the long-awaited Messiah sent by God. So, after three months, Paul and those that believed moved to a public lecture hall (Hall of Tyrannus) where Paul continued teaching for more than two years. Why were those Jewish men overcome by the demons? They spoke the name of Jesus, but regarded the name of the Savior of the world as only another incantation to be used to wield power. The miracles wrought by Paul in the name of Jesus, created great excitement in Ephesus. Among those who practiced magic arts were certain Jewish exorcists, who claimed to possess the same power exercised by Paul. Believing that the name of Jesus acted as a charm, they determined to cast out evil spirits by the same means which the apostle had employed.{ST, May 18, 1882} Within these pagan occult religions which predominated in Ephesus, people seek after spiritual power and illumination from someone/something other than the true God. These Jews did not believe Jesus was the Son of God. They did not believe He offered salvation from sin. They lowered Christ to the same level as the spirits they wished to expel. Paul taught the Gentiles about Jesus. He was entering the arena which the "prince of darkness" claimed as his. In the days of the apostles, the city of Ephesus was famed for the worship of the goddess Diana and the practice of magic. The temple of Diana was considered, for its size and splendor, one of the wonders of the world. Its surpassing magnificence made it the pride of both the city and the nation. The idol itself was but an uncouth wooden image, on which were inscribed mystic characters and symbols. These were supposed to possess great power. When pronounced, they were said to accomplish wonders. When written, they were treasured as a potent charm to guard their possessor from robbers, from disease, and even from death. Numerous and costly books were written by the Ephesians to explain the meaning and use of these mysterious symbols. {ST, May 18, 1882 par. 1} In that time the very name "Ephesus" brought to mind what was then called "the magical arts". The magical arts were part of a variety of satanically-empowered, occult religions that draw upon demonic power to influence people. Ephesus was an "occult center" in Asia and perhaps in the Roman empire. This city was so identified with demonic, dark "magic" powers, that documents in the Ancient Near East containing spells, incantations or curses were called "Ephesian writings." Paul makes it clear in this letter written to the Ephesians in chapter six that people are in a spiritual warfare for "we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places." Paul's letter is all about the Great Controversy, a battle between Christ and Satan. He is clearly outlining the winning team. How much evidence in his letter to the Ephesians does Paul give, explaining the true greatness and power of our risen Savior. What does Paul write which contains direct contrast between the god of this world, and the God of power, love, mercy?

Eph. 2:12 "without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world"
Without Christ there is no hope. The forces of evil are too strong. The demons have a strangle hold... BUT
A wonderous, mighty power is available! The mightiest power ever unleashed on this earth was when God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Satan and all of his evil forces were aligned in full battle force when Jesus lay in the tomb. If he could have kept Jesus from rising from the dead, Satan would have been triumphant. But all his hosts could not keep Jesus in the grave. HE AROSE, Christ arose a victor over all evil, death and the grave! Satan is a defeated foe. And so Paul writes with great eloquence, and praise, to make the point that God?s power in raising Jesus from the dead was the mightiest display of power ever known.
Eph. 1:18 I pray that the eyes of your understanding may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength 20 he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion.
His incomparably great power for us who believe. His is not only great power, but incomparably great power.
Paul is not praying that God would give us this mighty power, but rather that the eyes of our understanding would be enlightened to know that this power is here for us, to work in us, to raise us up out of the deadly strangle hold of evil into newness of life, if we believe in Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 2:1-6 we read -- we who were dead in our sins, God raises us up and seats us with Christ in the heavenly places. His point here is that the same power that raised Christ from the dead and seated Him at God?s right hand is the power that raises us up from the deadly pits of evil unto newness of life in Him. It is only in Christ -- through this incomparably great power that we are saved.

How would you compare it to what Simon Magnus was doing... 9 But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one: 10 To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God. 11 And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries. 12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done. 14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: 15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: 16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) 17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. 18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, 19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. 20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. 21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. 22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. 23 For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity. 24 Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me. Acts 8:9-24

How would Simon Magnus (Acts 9:9-24) compare with the exorcists and magicians and Artemus cult in Ephesus?
There are only two sources of supernatural power. The two sides are defined as Christ with His angels vs the dragon with his angels. The two sides are totally incompatible with each other. . The pagan occult religions which predominated in Ephesus, sought after spiritual power and illumination from something/spiritualistic other than the true God. They were under the control of the prince of darkness. Simon Magnus was into the magical sorcery as well.
However, Jewish exorcists in Ephesus and Simon Magnus in Samaria realized God's power was far greater than the power they had drawn from before. They wanted that power for their own glory to receive selfish benefits, admiration for self, and ability to control others, not to advance God's glory for salvation.
The Ephesian pagans were "without God, without hope" in the kingdom of the prince of darkness.
The Jewish exorcists and Simon Magnus were committing "spiritual adultery" -- wanting a part in both kingdoms. Wanting God's power to enhance their pagan condition and selfish status, but still remained in the kingdom of the prince of darkness.
Those who leave paganism and accept Christ are "born again" by the power of God into the kingdom of light (The kingdom of God). No longer slaves to the prince of darkness.
The letter to the Ephesians is all about what God, through Christ has done to offer them and us this wonderous gift of salvation, life, and the light of His glory, to lift us out of the kingdom of darkness, into His glorious kingdom of righteousness and life.

Read Ephesians 1:3-14
Paul is praising God for His wonderful gifts
"A thank you note usually includes a description of the gift or gifts received. Paul includes a long gift list in Ephesians 1:3-14 as he thanks God for the blessings of the gospel."
1. God blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ vs 3 It is your Creator who has poured out to you all heaven in one wondrous gift,--His only-begotten Son. . . . {CS46.2}
2.God chose us in Him before the foundation of the world
3. He has determined to adopt us as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself,
4 He made every provision for us to be holy and without blame before Him in love
5. He made us accepted in the Beloved--Jesus.
6. He gave redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins
7. He made grace to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence
8. In Him also we have obtained an inheritance
"The Holy Spirit, the representative of Himself, is the greatest of all gifts. All "good things" are comprised in this."LHU 107
God has opened the door to heaven wide, provided all we need to have eternal life with Him. It is His wish, pleasure and joy when we respond and accept all these awesome gifts and grow in grace characters reflecting His image.

Paul first pictures the Holy Spirit as a ?seal,? identifying a sealing presence of the Spirit that occurs from the time of conversion.... The presence of the Holy Spirit in their lives marks believers as belonging to God and conveys God?s promise to protect them (compare Ephesians 4:30). They have been ?sealed with the promised Holy Spirit? (Ephesians 1:13, ESV). The word translated ?guarantee? (arrabon) was a Hebrew loan word that was used widely in the common or Koine Greek of New Testament times to indicate a ?first installment,? ?deposit,? or ?down payment? that requires the payer to make additional payments.
Note that believers do not pay this down payment but receive it from God. The treasured presence of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers, says Paul, is a first installment of the full inheritance of salvation and redemption that will come with the return of Christ. Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also you believed, you were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 1:14 Which is the earnest (down payment) of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. Is there a difference between the final apocalyptic seal, and the Gospel seal that Paul assures us all Christians receive when they have committed their lives to Christ? Yes, the apocalyptic seal is given only to those who have the gospel seal, it is a final protective seal, a seal of confirmation. The gospel seal is given when a person accepts Christ and is the initial declaration the person belongs to Christ and is growing by the power of the Holy Spirit as they live "in Christ". While the two are not the same, the apocalyptic seal is totally dependent on the work of the Gospel of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit within the individuals life. Without the gospel seal, none will receive the apocalyptic seal! There are three things to look at: 1. There is the process of sealing 2. There is Someone doing the sealing 3. There is the seal itself. The Holy Spirit and the Sealing The Holy Spirit's job is to sanctify us. 1 Peter 1:2 We are sanctified by the Spirit unto obedience 1 Peter 1:22 We are purified in obeying the truth, through the Spirit in sincere love and pure heart. 2 Thess. 2:13 God chose us for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit 1 Thess. 4:7,8 God called us for cleanness and holiness, if we reject this we reject not man, but God who has sent His Spirit. How does the Spirit sanctify us? John 14:17 He dwells within us if we ask in Christ's name John 14:26 He will teach us all things John 16:8 He will convict us of sin, of righteousness and judgment John 16:13 The Spirit of truth will guide you into all truth: he will show you things to come. John 16.14 He shall glorify Christ and help people know Him: Romans 8:2 He frees us from law of sin and death ? that other law lodged in our flesh, which wars against the God's law of righteousness-Romans 7:23) Romans 8:5 He sets our minds on the things of God Romans 8:13 Through the Spirit we put to death the deeds of the body Romans 8:26 He helps us in our weaknesses Romans 8:29 He conforms us to the image of God 1 Cor. 2:13,14 He teaches us spiritual things, helping us to discern spiritual things 2 Cor. 3:3 He writes God's ways on our hearts Hebs. 8:10 He writes God's laws on our hearts Hebs. 10:15-16 He puts God's laws into our hearts and minds 2 Cor. 3:18 He transforms us into the image of the Lord as we behold as in a mirror the glory of Christ Eph. 3:16 He strengthens us in the inner man Eph. 3:17 He roots and grounds us in the love of Christ Eph. 3:18 He helps us comprehend the breadth, length, depth and height of the love of Christ which passes knowledge that we might be filled with the fulness of God. Eph. 5:9 He develops in us the fruit of the Spirit which is all goodness, righteousness and truth We are sealed by the Holy Spirit Eph. 1:13 Having believed in Christ we are sealed with the Holy Spirit of Promise. Eph. 4:25-30 So put away lying, anger, stealing, bad language and do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God by whom you are sealed for the day of Redemption. The sealing process is done by Christ through the Holy Spirit and this process is the process of sanctification. The sealing process is being led into a life of obedience to God's laws by the Holy Spirit, and kept there by the Holy Spirit's power. What happens if we resist the Holy Spirit and refuse to give up our sins? If we refuse, we grieve Him away, and if He is shut out of our lives, there is no more forgiveness. (See Matt 12:33) Eph. 4:30 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption In the end, those who submitted to the Holy Spirit's leading, and made Christ there focus and all in all, will be sealed in a special way to carry them through the great time of trouble. And their keeping of all of God's law, especially the one that connects them in a loving relationship with the Creator, will be a sign to the whole universe that they are God's children.

Hebrews 13:20 Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, 21 make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
Paul is emphasizing the mighty power of God which raised Christ from the dead is available and can raise people from spiritual deadness unto spiritual life; a power that transforms Christ's trusting, obedient followers into new creatures of righteousness!
Last quarter we studied about a world worshipping at the wrong shrine, and the call to come out of Babylon. Most Christians wrongly assume that this false worship which will be imposed will be a religious form readily distinguished from Christianity.
May we suggest that this false worship will have many appealing good things, but is based in a large measure on forgetting the Power of God. We see in the world today a huge assault on Christian morals. Christians lament the moral and spiritual decline of the nation and blame it all on the atheists and humanists whom God has never charged with building up societies moral and spiritual foundation.
What we see in the letter of Ephesians is a call to Christians to understand the exceedingly great power of Christ far above the power of atheists and humanists or any other earthly power.
Now, in society, we see a backlash from the Christian right who are appalled with what's happening and who are reacting to the secularization in society and looking to get hold of civil power to set things straight. However, it is the secularization of the religious churches that are the biggest problem. Making politics the means to promote the gospel is tapping into the wrong power!!!! Most have forsaken their true source of power which alone can change society. Paul and the other disciples made a huge change in their society, not by using political power, but by being empowered by the Holy Spirit, and setting before the people the life changing, transforming gospel of Christ.
Sadly, Christianity has been pretty intent on divorcing obedience from the gospel. The "under grace not under the law" has been twisted to mean grace releases one from obeying God's law (done mainly to get away from the Sabbath). Well, they removed the protective moral wall, not the wall of prejudice Paul was talking about, but the protective wall of God's commandments, and society happily (or miserably) plunged into lawlessness.
Christianity has denied the power of God that Paul is talking about, even though they still in their inner belief know the commandments are the standard for a moral society. So now they are working to increasingly plug into civil power.
But civil power does not change hearts. It uses force. It is God's great and marvelous power we need that transforms lives, and as individual lives are transformed, society itself is transformed.

THE MYSTERY OF THE GOSPEL
What is this mystery?
Ephesians 3:3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, 3:4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) 3:5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; 3:6 That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel: 3:9 And to make all people see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world has been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: 3:16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; 3:17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 3:18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what [is] the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 3:19 And to know the love of Christ,

Ephesians 3:3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, 3:4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) 3:5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; 3:6 That the Gentiles should be fellow heirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel: 3:9 And to make all people see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world has been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: 3:16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; 3:17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 3:18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what [is] the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 3:19 And to know the love of Christ, This mystery was not known prior? 3:5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; The great prophets, like Isaiah, Jeremiah, Moses, did not fully understand this mystery? They were given great revelations but something about this mystery they fully grasp. It wasn't until Jesus came that the mystery began to unfold. It was Jesus, talking about the kingdom of heaven in parables that said: " I will utter what has been hidden since the foundation of the world." (Matthew 13:35)God had revealed much through the prophets, and through the sanctuary system, preparing people to accept the greatest gift heaven had to offer: the Son of God, the Creator of all things to appear in this world taking upon Himself the humanity of the created. But for them it was still a great mystery both the event and the realities made possible by that event. They could not fully understand. Though the NT brings this mystery into a clearer focus, we still don't fully understand.

Yes he can cause people to reject God because God has given all his sentient creation the ability to be free moral agents. It was a mystery to the Jews of His day because of all the trash they had covered up the good news of the gospel with. The Talmud is prime evidence of this. Hope this helps.

The mystery of God. We deceive ourselves if we think we have the full grasp of it. It is still a mystery to most people today. Oh, we try to define it by examples of human practices, but all of these fall short. All of them focus more on human achievement which humans offer to God, rather than to the grand truths of what God has done and will do for His trusting people. Only by the power of the Holy Spirit can we begin to be awed by the great plan of redemption. EGW comments: To save the transgressor of God's law, Christ, the one equal with the Father, came to live heaven before men, that they might learn to know what it is to have heaven in the heart. He illustrated what man must be to be worthy of the precious boon of the life that measures with the life of God. The life of Christ was a life charged with a divine message of the love of God, and he longed intensely to impart this love to others in rich measure. Compassion beamed from his countenance, and his conduct was characterized by grace, humility, truth, and love. Every member of his church militant must manifest the same qualities, if he would join the church triumphant. The love of Christ is so broad, so full of glory, that in comparison to it, everything that men esteem as great, dwindles into insignificance. When we obtain a view of it, we exclaim, O the depth of the riches of the love that God bestowed upon men in the gift of his only begotten Son! When we seek for appropriate language in which to describe the love of God, we find words too tame, too weak, too far beneath the theme, and we lay down our pen and say, "No, it cannot be described." We can only do as did the beloved disciple, and say, "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God." [1 John 3:1.] In attempting any description of this love, we feel that we are as infants lisping their first words. Silently we may adore; for silence in this matter is the only eloquence. This love is past all language to describe. It is the mystery of God in the flesh, God in Christ, and divinity in humanity. Christ bowed down in unparalleled humility, that in his exaltation to the throne of God, he might also exalt those who believe in him, to a seat with him upon his throne. All who look upon Jesus in faith that the wounds and bruises that sin has made will be healed in him, shall be made whole.
The themes of redemption are momentous themes, and only those who are spiritually minded can discern their depth and significance . It is our safety, our life, our joy, to dwell upon the truths of the plan of salvation. Faith and prayer are necessary in order that we may behold the deep things of God. Our minds are so bound about with narrow ideas, that we catch but limited views of the experience it is our privilege to have. How little do we comprehend what is meant by the prayer of the apostle, when he says, "That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his spirit in the inner man; that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height, and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God. Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen." [Ephesians 3:16-21.]--Review and Herald, Nov. 17, 1891. -

THE MYSTERY OF THE GOSPEL
This mystery was not known prior? 3:5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;
The great prophets, like Isaiah, Jeremiah, Moses, did not fully understand this mystery? They were given great revelations but something about this mystery they fully grasp. It wasn't until Jesus came that the mystery began to unfold. It was Jesus, talking about the kingdom of heaven in parables that said: " I will utter what has been hidden since the foundation of the world." (Matthew 13:35)
God had revealed much through the prophets, and through the sanctuary system, preparing people to accept the greatest gift heaven had to offer: the Son of God, the Creator of all things to appear in this world taking upon Himself the humanity of the created. But for them it was still a great mystery both the event and the realities made possible by that event. They could not fully understand.
Though the NT brings this mystery into a clearer focus, we still don't fully understand.
But why was it a mystery, why not make if plain for all to see and understand. Could the devil somehow interfere if it was made clear..
This mystery could only be revealed by Christ, that's why it was not really understood in the ages before. For no verbal description could reveal it. I'll let Ellen White answer that question: "God Reached Humanity Through Humanity.-- Christ alone was able to represent the Deity. He who had been in the presence of the Father from the beginning, He who was the express image of the invisible God, was alone sufficient to accomplish this work. No verbal description could reveal God to the world. Through a life of purity, a life of perfect trust and submission to the will of God, a life of humiliation such as even the highest seraph in heaven would have shrunk from, God Himself must be revealed to humanity. In order to do this, our Saviour clothed His divinity with humanity. He employed the human faculties, for only by adopting these could He be comprehended by humanity. Only humanity could reach humanity. He lived out the character of God through the human body which God had prepared for Him. He blessed the world by living out in human flesh the life of God, thus showing that He had the power to unite humanity with divinity (RH June 25, 1895)
"To bring humanity into Christ, to bring the fallen race into oneness with divinity, is the work of redemption. Christ took human nature that men might be one with Him as He is one with the Father, that God may love man as He loves His only-begotten Son, that men may be partakers of the divine nature, and be complete in Him (RH April 51906). {7BC 927.3} .

3:20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
3:16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; 3:17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,
How little we understand the implication of those words!
exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think!!!
What does that mean to you? God, who created and rules the immeasurable universe, promises us that He will work in us, strengthen us through His Holy Spirit, and live in us by faith.
That indeed is a mystery. How God can connect us to Divine power strong enough to conquer evil principles, overcome sin, and live for Christ.
With a God like that, eager to uplift and save. why do people say they "can't let go of some sin.

I've been coming to understand just how good for the last year. The love of God goes far beyond our imagination. I think our knowledge of just how loving He is will grow throughout eternity. Why do people say they can't let go of sin? Because they have always studied about God and not to know Him.

Our text for this week may interest those who are studying how different translations render texts differently.
Which translation best represents the message Paul is presenting?
Ephesians 4:1-2 I ...beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, 2 with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, NKJV
Instead of "vocation" (which KJV uses) the word "calling" is used. This calling was explained by Paul in the preceding three chapters. Through the Holy Spirit people are called to partake of the grace of God, and to join into the fellowship of like believers in Jesus Christ with no ethnic or ritualistic barriers, to reveal the character fitting a follower of Christ, to share the gospel with the world, and partake of His glory.
I ...beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, 2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; KJV
The New Living Translation gives a thought translation
I...beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God. 2 Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other?s faults because of your love. NLT
I urge you who have been chosen by God to live up to the life to which God called you. 2 Always be humble, gentle, and patient, accepting each other in love. NCV
I...exhort you to live in a manner worthy of the calling with which you were called: 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, putting up with one another in love LEB
So I am asking you to live a life worthy of what God chose you for. 2 Don?t be proud at all. Be completely gentle. Be patient. Put up with one another in love. NIrV
I... implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love,NASB
Paul, beseeches, begs, exhorts, asks, implores us......
to, walk worthy, lead a life worthy, live up to the life, live in a manner worthy,
with all lowliness, meekness, longsuffering, humble, gentle, patient, humility, gentleness, patience,
bearing with, forbearing, making allowances for faults, accepting , putting up with , tolerating each other in love.
The message is for the believers in the church to live lives of trustful submission to God, which shows in their gentleness and patient self restraint as they deal with the provocations of others.
This is NOT a call to tolerate sin, but a call to be loving, understanding, seeking to help, uplift. Having been forgiven we forgive, having been lifted up from our own pitfalls, we seek to uplift others. Self is put aside and we work with Christ for others. Unity of the spirit is only achieved when the Holy Spirit is directing our lives and molding our hearts.

SEVEN ONES One body, one Spirit., One hope, One Lord, One faith, One baptism, One God and Father of all.
The Holy Spirit gives special gifts for building up the church. They were given "for the perfecting of the saints, unto the work of ministering, unto the building up of the body of Christ." (Eph 4:12) We all have our task, though our task may well be different from our neighbor's task.
The goal -- "till we all attain the unity of faith ...unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ."(Eph 4:13)
God is working to bring His church into unity of one faith. There is "one faith", but we all realize that our grasp of this faith is imperfect. There is "one Lord" but our knowledge of Christ is incomplete. There is one baptism, but do we all realize what that one baptism signifies? The goal is the attainment of true faith and knowledge "till we all attain unto a perfect man". (Eph.4:13) The singular "man", as Paul is talking of the church, the one body of Christ.
Salvation is all centered in Christ, He is the head. It is one hope, one faith, one baptism. There is only one road to heaven. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. (John 14:6) There is only one true Holy Spirit that works on our hearts and minds to bring us into this one and only way to eternal life and reunite estranged mankind, as many as will believe, with God our Father, the Creator and Sustainer of all.
So the Holy Spirit enables apostles, evangelists, pastors, teachers (Eph.4:11-13) and gives other gifts in order that the church may attain both the full knowledge, growth and full measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.

Ephesians 6:10-18 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 6:14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 6:15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
STAND -- the word is repeated to emphasize -- STAND, It is a serious command -- to STAND in a very serious battle. It doesn't say "fight", it says STAND! What does it mean to Stand? There is a strong force seeking to overthrow us! The battle is REAL, not with the clash of bombs, tanks and guns, but very real spiritually, emotionally, and mentally. What can we do to stand? There is only one source of strength that enables us to STAND. First, we are to put on the armor of God. Paul says, "Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." The clear implication is that if we do not put on the whole armor of God, we will not be able to stand. We cannot stand without this armor, which, again is not metallic hardware, it too is figurative language for something very real. Something very necessary if we are to stand against the constant thrusts of the devil to knock us down, spiritually, mentally and emotionally. Second, we are to pray. The armor can't fully protect us, if we are not connected with the power source. To stand, we must pray. Talk to God about everything in our life, lean on his help, seek His Holy Spirit to enlighten our minds and hearts with His Word. Engage ourselves directly and personally with the God who is our strength and our help. Third: we need to watch. Don't lay back, and close your eyes, thinking all is well. Watch and pray that you enter not into temptation. Watch with perseverance.

THE GREAT BATTLE! From the lesson (Tues Sept. 12) with the texts written Having conquered the ?rulers and authorities? at the cross (Colossians 2:15, Christ having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them . ), the exalted Christ now works out the results of that victory from His position as exalted Lord over the powers (Philippians 2:9-11 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, all in heaven, and all in earth, and all under the earth; And every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. ). Recruiting His followers as combatants in the cosmic war, Christ leads the armies of light toward a grand day of victory (1 Corinthians 15:54-58, 2 Thessalonians 2:8, Romans 16:20).
2 Thess 2:8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Romans 16:20 And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
1 Cor 15:54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. 15:55 O death, where [is] thy sting? O grave, where [is] thy victory? 15:56 The sting of death [is] sin; and the strength of sin [is] the law. 15:57 But thanks [be] to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. That gives us the assurance that Christ has won the deciding battle against Satan and his hosts. And we have the promise that death and the grave will be vanquished forever. But again we find ourselves still in the battle being urged once more to STAND, stedfast, unmoveable implying there are strong forces still doing their utmost to knock us down. "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places" (Ephesians 6:12). But thanks be to God Who gives us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. A battle unseen by human eyes is being waged. The army of the Lord is here, seeking to save souls. Satan and his host are also at work, trying in every possible way to deceive and destroy. The Lord bids us: "Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Day by day the battle goes on. If our eyes could be opened to see the good and evil agencies at work, we would be spending much more time in prayer, seeking His help, His shelter, His will for us. Our victory depends on the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. For the outpouring of the Spirit every child of God and of truth should pray. "We are not left to struggle alone against the mighty opposing forces of evil. Were our eyes opened, we should see heavenly angels about us, to protect us from the influence of the hosts of evil. Jesus watches over every one. He will not suffer us to be tempted above that which, with his help, we are able to bear. He desires us to have faith and confidence in him, that he may fill us with peace and happiness. {RH, August 1, 1907 par. 12}

O grave, where [is] thy victory? 15:56 The sting of death [is] sin; and the strength of sin [is] the law. 15:57 But thanks [be] to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. That gives us the assurance that Christ has won the deciding battle against Satan and his hosts. And we have the promise that death and the grave will be vanquished forever. But again we find ourselves still in the battle being urged once more to STAND, stedfast, unmoveable implying there are strong forces still doing their utmost to knock us down. "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places" (Ephesians 6:12). But thanks be to God Who gives us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. A battle unseen by human eyes is being waged. The army of the Lord is here, seeking to save souls. Satan and his host are also at work, trying in every possible way to deceive and destroy. The Lord bids us: "Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Day by day the battle goes on. If our eyes could be opened to see the good and evil agencies at work, we would be spending much more time in prayer, seeking His help, His shelter, His will for us. Our victory depends on the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. For the outpouring of the Spirit every child of God and of truth should pray. "We are not left to struggle alone against the mighty opposing forces of evil. Were our eyes opened, we should see heavenly angels about us, to protect us from the influence of the hosts of evil. Jesus watches over every one. He will not suffer us to be tempted above that which, with his help, we are able to bear. He desires us to have faith and confidence in him, that he may fill us with peace and happiness. {RH, August 1, 1907 par. 12} Its happening, but because people cant see it with their eyes, they just dont believe it.

The Armor God wants us to accept from Him, and put on, to stand in the great battle. (read Ephesians 6:13-20)
1.The belt of truth.
This belt holds everything else together. When we know the truth of the matter it gives us purpose, and a foundation to stand upon. Without this belt we drift and everything just kind of flaps around in the breeze. We need the truth as it is in Jesus, or we are swept away with lies.
2. The breast plate of righteousness
The breastplate protects the heart. This breastplate is Christ's imputed and imparted righteousness. It means we know our sins are forgiven, our guilt wiped away as we ask Christ to forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. It was Christ's death upon the cross by which He can forgive us and declare us righteous! This moves our hearts in love and service for Him! With Christ's righteousness upon us, it empowers us to live righteously as we live with and for Him.
3, The shield of faith
Faith is the certainty that God is, and that He loves and guides us. Faith is fully trusting God. Believing He is real and His promises are sure. Being certain that He has accepted us, is with us always, empowering us to fight and win the battles against sin. And He has made all the provisions so we can have a wonderful future with Him! Faith in Christ's Word, fills a person with courage, hope and assurance.
4 Sword of the Spirit -- the Word of God.
It is written -- was Christ's response to the devil when tempted. The sword of the spirit The Holy Spirit inspired the prophets to write messages from God, to reveal to His God's truth. The Holy Spirit enlightens our minds to understood God's message and will for our lives.
5. Shoes Enables us to take the gospel of peace and salvation to others.
6. Helmet of Salvation The helmet protects the head. The biggest battle is the battle for the mind. That is the where we make our choices, our decisions, and determine our destiny. Are our thoughts centered on Christ and His salvation? Prov 23:7 For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. 2 Corinthians 10:5. Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5.
"The power of right thought is more precious than the golden wedge of Ophir. . . . We need to place a high value upon the right control of our thoughts, for such control prepares the mind and soul to labor harmoniously for the Master. It is necessary for our peace and happiness in this life that our thoughts center in Christ. As a man thinketh, so is he. Our improvement in moral purity depends on right thinking and right acting. . . . Evil thoughts destroy the soul. The converting power of God changes the heart, refining and purifying the thoughts. Unless a determined effort is made to keep the thoughts centered on Christ, grace cannot reveal itself in the life. The mind must engage in the spiritual warfare. Every thought must be brought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. {HP 164.1}
