Well, since I grew up in the province that has everything but an ocean, I think I can be forgiven for not knowing what dulse is! Of course, having looked it up on google, I now knwo that it is a seaweed of some sort that Maritimers eat like it were beef jerky. Sounds interesting - how does it taste????

We can buy it in the stores around here, therefore, I thought it would also be available in your stores. I am not certain how to explain what it tastes like, however, it does have a nice salty tasts to it. Can some of you other Maritimers, or dulse eaters, help me?

Well, Daryl, I had to find out so I went to a health food store on lunch and asked if they had it. They didn't have any in stock but they said it cost about $2.69 for 40 grams when they do, so it is fairly expensive and does not appear to be a commonly stocked item.
I may just have to see if I can find it and give it a try some day.

We can buy dulse in Sobeys, the SuperStore, etc. in our neck of the woods. Maybe, I should send you some.

1) Elderly meat eaters often have real problems with obtaining enough B-12. At the hospital where I work, we have a lot of elderly people who come in regularly to recieve a B-12 shot. B-12 is critical. An inadaquate amount can cause irreverable nerve damage.
2) Going by memory (What did you say my name is?) B-12 is produced in the intesinal tract by bacteria--No, bacteria are not B-12. Even humans produce it, but, NOT in an amount enough to prevent serious damage. Many animals, for whatever reason (eating dirt?) produce it in much greater amounts.

You're right Gregory, my research yesterday did say that we produce it in our large intestine, but we can't absorb it from there because by the time it is produced it is passed into the colon where we can't absorb anything. Apparently, it can also take up to 30 years for a deficiency to become apparent for a person who has stopped ingesting vitamin B due to stores in the body. However, the majority of B12 deficiency is because of inability to absorb... Daryl, I would love for you to send me some Dulse! Like Wendy, I am intrigued and would like to try it (just not at $2.60 for 40g!) LMK

Sarah & Wendy, I could probably send some to Sarah, however, probably not to Wendy as it probably wouldn't make it across the border into the USA.

For more information on dulce try this website: Fundy Island Gems. According to the information there, it also grow in the northwest Pacific. Wendy, since you live in Washington state, you might find it at a fish market as well as health food stores. BTW, all the seaweek I've ever eaten, including dulce, has a more or less fishy taste. It's great for flavoring vegetarian dishes to taste like seafood (such as mock crab cakes). [ December 12, 2002, 05:32 PM: Message edited by: Linda S ]

Daryl,
It sounds like you could start a dulse exporting business. Maybe that's the next "wave". I have occasionally had some when friends have come back from the maritimes. I would love to find some around here. I think I will check at Sobey's here in Ontario and see what they might carry.
