The Seventh-day Adventist Health Message The relationship of one's religion and healthful living traces back to the Levitical Laws on health and hygiene given to the ancient Israelites while in the wilderness of their Exodus experience. The purpose certainly included the hygiene principles necessary to prevent and combat communicable diseases made possible by such gathering of people who lived and traveled together in the desert environment. Issues of sanitation were addressed. Principles of healthful living were emphasized in order to keep the desert travelers robust in body, mind, and soul. Later, fasting appears as a ready remedy for those who sought special powers or healing, for those seeking discernments, or signs of repentance. Later the New Testament drew attention to matters of temperance or self control, here again emphasizing the importance of making decisions that would give the believer an advantage in the development of his body, mind, and soul. The believer who practiced self control would have more discernment, be able to endure hardships, and be in better position to bring under control totally, the body, mind and soul. Such teachings had been lost over the centuries. By the 19th century mankind came to a new understanding of the relationship of health and hygiene and the overall health of the population. The second half of the 19th century saw dramatic increases in the awareness of sanitation and cleanliness, how foods affected health, the uses of water, air, and exercise, in the prevention and treatment of disease. Various hydrotherapies were introduced. The consumption of health foods e.g. graham crackers, the introduction of dry cereals, and proper uses of fruits and vegetables were highlighted. For mental and emotional health, sanitariums came into being which addressed the aforementioned health principles and added the care of gardens and of working outdoors, in an attempt to combat the increase of stress and nervous disorders found in an ever increasing industrial society. During this time some Adventist church leaders and health professionals assessed the exploding interest in health and hygiene and carefully gleaned principles that were of enduring nature. By combining the Biblical principles found in the Levitical Laws, the emphasis on self-control, with the emerging health and hygiene principles of the 19th century, the Seventh-day Adventist Church developed a unique teaching for the prevention and treatment of disease, that has stood the test of time. Seventh-day Adventists saw the body, mind and soul as organs that responded favorably to fresh air, sanitary and hygienic principles. Further, they saw a balance between work and conditioning exercise. A special emphasis had been placed on self control (temperance) issues i.e.. abstaining from injurious tobacco practices, alcohol, the avoidance of patent remedies of the day in favor of natural remedies, the increased care for hygiene and sanitation, and a strong emphasis on plain and simply prepared foods, all of which came to fuller appreciation in the later 20th century. The last quarter of the 20th century has witnessed the introduction of health principles for reducing fat and adding high fiber to the diet leading to a light or moderate use of meat and dairy products as preferable. This very teaching is basic to the Adventist teaching of abstaining from flesh food, the greater daily use of fruits and vegetables, and light to moderate use of dairy products, which in the nutrition world would be advocacy for a Lacto - ovo- vegetarian diet. The church's 150 years of denouncing smoking is now supported in the scientific understanding of health problems associated with tobacco. While alcohol is still widely consumed, its deleterious effects are well known in the scientific community. The identification of natural remedies and reduced patent remedies that did more harm than good, were identified by the Seventh-day Adventist health conscience practitioners many years before science support the theory. The Seventh-day Adventist mission populations in third world countries are known for their sanitation and hygienic practices, earning the name of "the clean people". Today Americans sit down to breakfast on dry cereals and various meatless frozen or canned entrees developed directly from grain and soy sources, thus bypassing the need for eating flesh foods. These foods were first developed in Adventist healthcare institutions and food factories. Health conscious people of today and those entering the new millennium are demanding a greater understanding of the health and hygienic principles, many of which were either first taught by Seventh-day Adventists or gleaned from the great variety of teachings that have emerged from the past two centuries. Even in the United States Dietary Guidelines 2000, greater use of soy and other legumes are recommended for protein, and the greatest emphasis is placed on plant based foods. In addition, exercise is recommended side by side with proper nutrition. The uniqueness of the Seventh-day Adventist health principles is they were far ahead of their times. *Special thanks to Dr. Joseph P. Stoia EdD for his literary review on the Seventh-day Adventist health message. <*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*> Taken from the SDADA website.

Our Health Message is Being Attacked!
Point by point our health message is being attacked. Where are the defenders of the faith? Where are those who are standing up for the truth? Every church member should know this is an emergency! We are on the brink of losing our health. Yes, on the brink of losing the most precious, valuable, thing a strong nation, a strong church can ever have. Heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, arthritis, osteopososis, etc. are raging in and out of the church.
Our eating is simply "out of control." So much of our food has become "weapons of mass destruction." Indeed, the appetizing "dainties" that we have come to love are killing us. Yes the high fat meat, and "sweets" junk food diet that has become Standard North American Fare has invaded our church and is taking a heavy toll. This, in spite of the fact that we have had the counsel from the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy since our inception.
Our historic health standards were divinely given and must not be allowed to disappear. A warning must be sounded!
Sandy Mitchell, writing in Why Christians should Be the Healthiest People in the World, warns: "An alarming conspiracy of greed grips our nation and is taking thousands of lives yearly. Giant voices are squashing those who are trying to alert the people to what is happening. A vindictive, cunning and destructive enemy is hypnotizing Christians (SDAs included). Like a Pied Piper, Satan is leading our people into a web of self-destruction. The 5 sensory avenues have turned into great highways by which degeneration accesses the mind. Destroying our heath is the appetizing weapon by which the adversary employs the final battle to control man's weakening bodies.
"Those who profit from the nation's health-destroying habits, from sickness and disease, will continue to label those who are crying out for people's health as being 'nit- picking,' 'trivial,' and 'health nuts.' Greed has taken precedence over health.
"The enemy is at your door. Don't let him in! Find out what you can do to fortify your health, mentally, physically, and spiritually. Satan is desperate! He is using subtle, last-ditch strategies to discredit and destroy [North] America! And what better way, especially through our youth, than with popular, raging, health and mind destroying deteriorating habits.
"To disregard knowledge that is in your best interest is to reject it. Many are going directly contrary to the knowledge God has given, bcause they are not reading their Bibles (or the Spirit of Prophecy)."
Let us wake up brothers and sisters, the Lord expects us to do everything we can to take care of our health. He, of course, is right by our sides to help us along the way.

"To us as a people God has given advanced truth, and we are to seek to gain access to souls, that we may give them this truth. As the physicians and nurses in our sanitariums hold out to the patients the hope of restoration to physical health, they are also to present the blessed hope of the gospel, the wonderful comfort to be found in the mighty Healer, who can cure the leprosy of the soul. Thus hearts will be reached, and He who gives health to the body will speak peace to the soul. The Life Giver will fill the heart with joy that will work miraculously." --Ellen G. White, The Kress Collection, p. 42.
""Seventh-day Adventists are to be represented to the world by the advance principles of health reform which God has given us." --Ibid. 13.
"No link is to be drawn between the genuine medical missionary work and the gospel ministry. These two must blend. They are not to stand apart as separate lines of work. They are to be joined in an inseparable union, even as the hand is joined to the body. Those in our institutions are to give evidence that they understand their part in the genuine gospel medical missionary work. A solemn dignity is to characterize genuine medical missionaries. They are to be men who understand and know God and the power of His grace." --Ibid. p. 44.
"...The obligation we owe to God, in presenting to Him clean, pure healthful bodies, are not comprehended. We have special duties resting upon us. [b]We should become acquainted with ou physical structure and the laws controlling natural life." -Ibid. p. 45.
Brothers an sisters, let us go onward and upward as the Lord leads.

This is a letter to the editor of the Adventist Review, June 27, 2013:
"an experience from last summer. I was playing golf in Maine, walking the course, when a man playing alone caught up with my playing partner and me. Golf etiquette teaches that you allow the faster player to play through. My friend knew the man and introduced us as ministers, he a Baptist and I a Seventh-day Adventist. The Baptist minister turned to me and said, 'Oh, you are the people who outlive everyone because of your healthful lifestyle.' He thanked us and hurried on his way." --Signed...Greeneville, Tennessee.
Comment: Yes!!! Our health message is making waves. Thank the Lord!

Blue Zones: What we can learn from the world's longest-living people
by Michael Ravensthorpe
(NaturalNews) In 2008, an American writer and explorer named Dan Buettner published a book entitled The Blue Zone: Lessons for Living Longer From the People Who've Lived the Longest. This book, which was an extension of a report Buettner wrote for National Geographic in 2005 about longevity, contained information about five regions in the world in which people lived for an unusually long time (often over 100 years, as proven by verifiable birth certificates). These five regions, which Buettner named the "Blue Zones," are:
*The Barbagia region of Sardinia, Italy *The tropical islands of Okinawa in Japan *Loma Linda, California (home of the Seventh Day Adventists religious group) *The small island of Ikaria in Greece *Costa Rica's isolated Nicoya Peninsula
Understanding that only 20 percent of how long a person lives is determined by genetics, Buettner and his research team began to monitor the diets and lifestyles of these Blue Zone centenarians in the hope of discovering the secrets of their longevity. His book is, in essence, an exploration of the recurring trends he found while interviewing and living among them. These trends were:
Frequent, natural exercise The most significant lifestyle factor shared by the centenarians of the Blue Zones, Buettner reported, was the frequency and gentleness of their exercise. These people, who often tended to their own gardens and farms, routinely exercised for more than five hours per day. However, their exercise was always based on natural movements such as moderate walking, gentle lifting and tilling the soil. Comparatively extreme exercise, such as weight lifting and marathon running, was non-existent.
Simple, plant-based diets
All of the centenarians embraced a simple diet that was high in fruits and vegetables (especially legumes) and low in fat, meat and refined sugar. They favored goat's milk to cow's milk, drank alcohol moderately (one or two glasses of wine per day with food was common) and only ate rich foods like meat and cheese around five times per month, if at all. Many of the plants they consumed were grown themselves, and very few of them ate fruits or vegetables that were out of season.
Here is a more specific list of the foods favored by the centenarians of each Blue Zone: *Sardinia - Bread, vegetables, small amounts of wine and goats' cheese, very little meat *Okinawa - Sweet potatoes, fermented soy products, rice, vegetables *Loma Linda - Fresh fruit, oatmeal, salads, vegetarian foods *Ikaria - Vegetables, wine, herbal teas, small amounts of meat *Nicoyans - Corn tortillas, beans, fruit, some animal products (mostly chicken and eggs)
Significantly, a large number of the centenarians also followed the "80 percent rule." That is, they consciously decided to stop eating when their stomachs were around 80 percent full, which prevented them from overeating.
A sense of belonging
Of the 268 centenarians interviewed by Buettner, 263 of them belonged to a faith-based community (the denomination didn't seem to matter) and regularly conversed with other believers. Additionally, most of them enjoyed the company of a mutually-supportive network of friends and family members; none of them lived alone in nursing homes. All of these factors contributed towards an enormous sense of belonging, which appeared to boost their psychological health.
Frequent exposure to sunshine
All of the Blue Zones are sunny, and all of the centenarians Buettner interviewed exposed themselves to sunshine regularly due to their outdoor lifestyles. Consequently, they received large amounts of natural vitamin D which, as studies have shown, is linked to improved mood and sleep, improved bone and eye health, and much more. Moreover, as Buettner and other researchers have noted, warm climates seem to promote a more relaxed "work to live" attitude to life.
"To make it to age 100, you have to have won the genetic lottery," Buettner concludes. "But most of us have the capacity to make it well into our early 90s and largely without chronic disease. As the [centenarians] demonstrate, the average person's life expectancy could increase by 10-12 years by adopting a Blue Zones lifestyle."
