I think that many times the reasons that the "old" hymns have lasted so long is because they are prayers. They touch our hearts because they say what we all feel but are unable to put into words. I have always felt this way about them, but I have to say that I was reading somewhere [forgive me, my memory is short today) that EGW said that many songs are prayers and need to be sung with the same reverence as if we were praying. Even today, the songs I find myself singing, whether they be old, new, contemporary or whatever, praise God and are prayer-like for me. I think that many of us find it easier to express ourselves if we can use someone elses words.

quote: Originally posted by A. Marttinen: No wonder the discerning church bretheren included this National Anthem in our one and only "real" 1941 Church Hymnal.(Why isn't it in the "new" Hymnal? I guess it joined "Sitting at the Feet of Jesus" in that great bin of music history)
Pastor Andrew, I have the answer!!! I was reading the introduction to my new hymnal (which I bought so my husband and I can learn the songs better) and it says that "The international character of the Seventh-day Adventist Church dictated that patriotic hymns tied to a single nation be passed over." (The Seventh-day Adventist Hymnal, Copyright 1995, 10th Printing 1998, p.6 Hope that makes sense! Have a great night! ------------------ Sarah Moss *Prayer Changes Things!*

Doesn't make sense to me and I'm not even Canadian. I miss a lot of the old songs I grew up with. I wasn't raised Adventist ( came in a few years ago) but I do remember the songs I sung in some of the churches I attended. Songs of praise, that uplifted God and Jesus and seemed to draw you right into the throne room. I found some of them on a CD, Beulah Land, Standing on the Promises, a lot of old songs sung by country folk. Blue Grass if you will. Oh, well, guess time passes by the old standards. ------------------ What is popular is not always right. What is right is not always popular. Gerry B.

When I took over as SS superintendent, I made up a little songbook of songs that had been left out of the newest hymnal along with choruses. I was finally able to use it yesterday in SS for the first time. Shock of shocks! Those people who barely open their mouths for songs from the hymnal were singing with what could be considered gusto yesterday morning. The old songs can still generate a lot of emotion and memories for folks of all ages. ------------------ ________________________ Even so come, Lord Jesus Linda

If the music uplifts and directs the heart to God, them we sing with the heart, if it just sits there like a bad memory of things best left unremembered, we tend to mumble. There are a lot of good songs today, just hard to find them amidst all the garbage that tries to pass itrself off as music these days. ------------------ What is popular is not always right.
