I know it is untraditional to post links, however, I just found a site that provides an excellent overview of Christian music from a uniquely Adventist perspective. It features an article by Dwight Nelson, conference officials, pastors, and others, along with extensive Biblical and Spirit of Prophecy references. It also features testimonies by people who have been affected by contemporary music. Check it out: Christian Music I know it's not normal to post links here, but because of the sheer depth of information, I thought it might at least provide an basis for discussion. PB

How about a few more links? This time mostly from people who are inside the CCM industry. Contemporary Christian Music I don't agree with everything on this page; she (he? the name could be either) says some things I find wrong, but she brings up some valid points people need to think about, and she is a CCM insider. Testing Music In the Church This is a long article. If you skip around you might miss the fact that the author has included extracts from people involved in CCM music. There are actually two pages. A link at the bottom of the first page will take you to the next one. The Sound of Music (1) And Paul, lest you think I purposely set out to find these pages, be assured I did not, I was searching for something else, and as often happens in web searches, you go to a page to read and something on that page catches your eye and you follow a link, etc. [ May 04, 2002: Message edited by: Linda Sutton ]

There is a glaring fault in this person's reasoning. In argument 1, he says, "- Throughout history, Satan has used, is using, and will use three ways to drag down Gods' people which we will examine. 1/ Perverting the gospel ... 2/ Love of the world... 3/ Persecution ... Now whatever scripture you use to describe Satan dragging people down (even the infamous "angel of light"), it has to be in one or more of these three ways ..." In fact, music is a whole different ball game. It bypasses the thinking, and heads straight for the emotions. Rapid beats are mind altering and addictive. Trances are induced by repetitive beats. People who frequent "raves" (dance parties) have commented to me that certain religious meetings, where full bands have set the tone, and rock style music is the worship music of choice, are nothing more than a "holy" dance party, and the level of induced excitement is equivalent to that experienced in a secular venue. So if all you're looking for is open rebellion against God, or distraction from the things of God, you might miss the whole reason this music is bad. That's as far as I could read, and the topic seemed based on the first incorrect premise.

Hello Just had to ask about your automatic connection of the word "music" with "Rapid beats" and "repetitive beats"? There is much more to music than rave! All instruments make nice music if in the hands of the right musicians. They could and should play the music in a way that it becomes worship instead of some simple dance concert. May God be with us all

Hello, västergötland! I was referring to the words in the article, not speaking of music in general. The writer was promoting rock, etc, as suitable for worship, as I recall. I agree that good music can be created from many things. I was trying to describe the effects of bad music. I think you and I would like the same music.

västergötland , now you've got me! I seldom buy music, preferring silence when I'm alone. However, when I encounter some good music, I'm singing it in my heart for days. I really like majestic hymns. If they're produced well, and the music is played well, that's my idea of heaven. I recently heard a man singing "Great is Thy Faithfulness", and the arrangement was modern, amazing, and inspiring. I can't give you his name easily - I have it saved on real player on my computer. But if you really want it, I'll make the supreme effort and let you know.

Zyph, You need only do this if it is managable. I would very much like to increase my collection of music that I enjoy.
God is great
