Climatic catastrophes strike as US freezes, Australia fries Countries around the world were trying to cope with climatic catastrophe, as a big freeze chilled Europe and North America, Brazil recovered from torrential rains, bushfires blazed in an Australian heatwave and Saudis prayed for rain to slake an ongoing drought. North America was plunged into the throes of an intense cold front that buried Buffalo, New York in almost one metre (three feet) of snow and saw temperatures slide well below freezing. In Europe, the chill has claimed hundreds of lives. A winter coldsnap in Poland has claimed 178 lives since October, according to local police, a figure well above the 112 killed by the cold last year. Authorities in Bulgaria declared a state of emergency in the northeast of the country after the worst snowfalls in 30 years, where three more people died in the intense cold, according to the civil defense department. And in Russia, no stranger to bitter cold, Moscow authorities Read more here

quote: The Great Controversy [1888 edition] Page 589 The Impending Conflict--Its CausesWhile appearing to the children of men as a great physician who can heal all their maladies, he will bring disease and disaster, until populous cities are reduced to ruin and desolation. Even now he is at work. In accidents and calamities by sea and by land, in great conflagrations, in fierce tornadoes and terrific hail-storms, in tempests, floods, cyclones, tidal waves, and earthquakes, in every place and in a thousand forms, Satan is exercising his power. He sweeps away the ripening harvest, and famine and distress follow. He imparts to the air a deadly taint, and thousands perish by the pestilence. These visitations are to become more and more frequent and disastrous. Destruction will be upon both man and beast. "The earth mourneth and fadeth away," "the haughty people . . . do languish. The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant."[1 ISA. 24:4, 5.] And then the great deceiver will persuade men that those who serve God are causing these evils. The class that have provoked the displeasure of Heaven will charge all their troubles upon those whose obedience to God's commandments is a perpetual reproof to transgressors. It will be declared that men are offending God by the violation of the Sunday-sabbath, that this sin has brought calamities which will not cease until Sunday observance shall be strictly enforced, and that those who present the claims of the fourth commandment, thus destroying reverence for Sunday, are troublers of the people, preventing their restoration to divine favor and temporal prosperity. Thus the accusation urged of old against the servant of God will be repeated, and upon grounds equally well established. "And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel? And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the Lord, and thou hast followed Baalim."[2 1 KINGS 18:17, 18.] As the wrath of the people shall be excited by false charges, they will pursue a course toward God's ambassadors very similar to that which apostate Israel pursued toward Elijah.
Luke 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh. Amen Wendy....thank you for your post. As we see all these things happening we need to keep even closer to our Lord and Saviour...Jesus Christ. In The Blessed Hope Avalee

Here in Calgary the weather has just gotten good and cold..it's about minus 25 celsius here this am. Plus we are getting snow. Sometimes, the weather is relative...my two boys are quite delighted as they got a new toboggan for Christmas; and believe it or not; they want to go out and toboggan in this weather! (so I have to go too)

An update on our weather - the bush fires have been terrible and we are poised for even worse today if the predicted weather pattern holds. Sydney today has predicted 95-105 degree F temperatures combined with strong NWerly winds and a late afternoon strong Southerly change. There are 7 thousand fire fighters out there. If the weather does happen as predicted they again do NOT expect to be able to contain the fires and more homes will be lost - 160 lost so far. So far, however, no lives lost - which is a great blessing! This fire is the worst for 30 years the news last night said. Part of the fire has already completely burnt out the electricty poles and lines in some of the Sydney area so the electricty is expected to be out for days in these areas - its still too hot to even get into some of this area. This means no pumping for sewer and no filtering for water - as well as no power to houses. I am not near any of the fires. The closest one went thru the little coastal village and adjoining State recreation area about 3/4 of an hour from here. The fire burnt right into the yards of many of the homes - but the devastation in the Park is terrible. This was an area of coastal rain forest - lush and beautiful - but there had been no hazard reduction burning for many years so when it started burning it was impossible to stop and much is now just white ashes. There are steep rocky cliffs down to the sea and even the plants clinging to crevices in the rocks were burnt out. What is particularly frightening about much of this tragedy is that at least half of the fires have been deliberately lit!! The State Premier was saying last night they intend to increase the penalty of 14 years inprisonment. We will all be praying today for fire fighters and residents in the path of the fire.

We had a fairly dry summer here last summer, however, we didn't have any fires that destroyed any homes. So far this winter, which just began, last night was the coldest so far showing -16 degrees Celcius. The day time temperature was around 0 or +1 degrees Celcius. We have had only a slight amount of snow so far. Yes, we need to pray about what is happening in mikk's part of the world.

Really only part of N.A. had very cold temps and snow. Buffalo always gets heavy snow and in fact it was late getting there. So they dealt with more in a short time rather than over the long run. Here on the west coast its been mild and rainy. A very usual winter as winters have gone the last few years. Australia having a heatwave would be newsworthy if it were winter for them but its summer there and s'posed to be hot. Im sorry if I sound like Im trivializing whats happening but I think bad weather would have to be more constant and more widespread to fit into a climatic catastrophe senario. I also think end time weather will be un-predicted (no weathermen telling us its going to rain and when and how much) out of season and very catastrophic, ie high death rates and homelessness. This is just my opinion only. Amelia

Hi Amelia, Thanks for your post. I do feel that the trend over the last few years has been towards unpredictable, cataclismic weather. The snowfall in Buffalo broke all records, and we have yet to find out if that is long-term or just a short-term amount as you suggest. No matter what, I believe many of us feel the presence of the Lord in greater measure than ever before, and sense that His coming is near and apparent. We must look at daily events in the light of prophecy as we know that we are the last generation before Christ returns. May God bless you and yours, Wendy
