Is it possible to become converted by an appreciation of the love of God revealed in Jesus Christ, irrespective of having sinned?
Theoretically, yes, but in reality "all have sinned." So, it involves all of the above.
My question was not theoretical, but practical. I'm asking if once must sin to be converted (i.e. after one is born again).
Can conversion deepen without one's sinning? That's what I'm asking.

What does it mean for the Holy Spirit to live in us? Does He literally abide in us? If so, where?

Yes, I think so. It's also called sanctification, which is the process of becoming more and more like Jesus, more and more mature in the fruits of the Spirit.
ML 250 "The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul." Through obedience comes sanctification of body, soul, and spirit. This sanctification is a progressive work, and an advance from one stage of perfection to another. {ML 250.4}
COL 160 At every advance step in Christian experience our repentance will deepen. {COL 160.3}
AA 561 So will it be with all who behold Christ. The nearer we come to Jesus, and the more clearly we discern the purity of His character, the more clearly shall we see the exceeding sinfulness of sin, and the less shall we feel like exalting ourselves. There will be a continual reaching out of the soul after God, a continual, earnest, heartbreaking confession of sin and humbling of the heart before Him. At every advance step in our Christian experience our repentance will deepen. We shall know that our sufficiency is in Christ alone and shall make the apostle's confession our own: "I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing." "God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world." Romans 7:18; Galatians 6:14. {AA 561.2}

That this is a question for us is arguably the greatest problem within adventism today, at least in the so called developed world. The reason we reach few and many of those reached leave within the first year. quote: 1While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples 2and asked them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" They answered, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit."
3So Paul asked, "Then what baptism did you receive?" "John's baptism," they replied.
4Paul said, "John's baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus." 5On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. 6When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. 7There were about twelve men in all.
Who will be "Paul" for us? Whom will God send to pray so that we may recieve the Holy Spirit living in the holy temples that are our bodies?
/Thomas

Do we need a Paul type person to receive the Holy Spirit? Or, haven't we already received the Holy Spirit the moment we were born again? Isn't it the Holy Spirit who empowers us to use our faculties of mind and body to resist temptations and to reproduce the lovely traits of Christ's character?
