Dial-up Problems

I find that my dial-up connection often loses its connection every few minutes, however, the connection software still acts as if it is still connected.
Does anybody know why this is happening?

Daryl, mine has also been acting this way in the past several days. I thought it was my server but perhaps it is a problem across the country...I don't know.
I will dial up and be on for perhaps 4-5 minutes when suddenly it will just disconnect on its own. Then I will go online again only to be on maybe for 10 minutes only to have it happen again. One time it did it at least 4 times in the 15 minute period I was on-line. But today it seems to be staying on okay (at least so far!).
Something strange is sure going on!!

There are a few reasons why you may be getting disconnected. 1. Incoming calls. You need to configure your dialup properties to send incoming calls to voicemail. 2. The quality of your telephone line. Dial 611 (In US) and they can test it out for you 3. Modem is not properly configured. For example you have 56kilobits (7KiloBytes modem), but it is actually trying to or did connect at 115kilobits, and this can cause discinnectsthis can cause instability of connection. 4. ISP detects if your session is idle aftre certain period of time you get the boot. There are probably some more, ut thats what I can think of at the moment. God Bless, Will

I guess I am one of the lucky ones my dial-up is great. It is even starting to connect at a higher speed. I hardly ever get disconnected and am able to sign on at anytime. I do not use a local provider, found them over the internet and have been very satified so far.

I've had pretty good success hooking people up with Toast.net, if they can't get broadband (cable, DSL) where they live, or don't want to pay the higher cost for it. http://www.toast.net/services/dialup/ Different plans for different tastes, nationwide access across the US and Canada. Of course if the phone lines where you live are bad, no ISP can fix that!

My ISP connection provider is the telephone company itself. I am still getting cut off way too often.

Daryl, this does not sound like a problem with your ISP or phone line. Or, if it is, you have TWO problems! Usually, if your modem disconnects—for whatever reason—your dialup connection (“connection software”) will know it and report it.
One quick-and-dirty thing you might try if you’re running Windows and you know the recommended connection settings for your ISP, delete the dialup connection, then, create a new one with the settings from your ISP. You can probably get the correct settings (and a tutorial on how to create a dialup connection for Windows) from your ISP’s tech support website. Speaking of tech support, what does your ISP say about your connection problems (assuming you’ve called)?
Another possibility is that your modem may be on it’s way to kaput! Not as likely, but it happens. If you’re running windows, you can turn on logging for your modem (other OS will probably do this also). Any error codes and such will then be recorded and you can look them up to see what’s going on. If you’re not sure how to do this and want to try, let me know. BTW, what OS you’re using?
John, Toast.net ROCKS! I used them for three or four years until I got broadband. They are solid, reliable and their tech support geeks aren’t arrogant, obnoxious, or ignorant.
HTH,
Jeff

Thank you for the information and the suggestions. I did discover something and made a change, therefore, I shall see if that solves the problem.

Glad to know that about your experience with Toast.net, Jeff, thanks. I'll feel that much more confident about recommending them now.
