Well, in simple words, I would define living by faith as believing God's mercy and depending on Him, both to be saved and to remain saved.

Are we saved by faith and are we justified daily? Is sanctification the work of a life time? No, yes, and sort of. We are not saved by faith. We are saved by grace through faith. Faith itself cannot save. We must be justified daily because we continuously fall short of God's glory. But that's just one meaning of "justified" - to declare righteous. Another meaning is to make righteous. This is often called sanctification. This is a process that continues throughout this life, and is completed when we put on incorruption. This kind of sanctification takes a lifetime to achieve. The third meaning is to do righteousness, also called sanctification. This is the one that is often overlooked. This is the "justified" of James 2:24. This one does not wait to happen until the end of the Christian's life. Rather, this continually happens throughout the Christian's life, and of course, throughout eternity. This kind of sanctification takes a lifetime to perform.

"Being Justified." In other words, being made righteous. To justify means to make righteous. God supplies just what the sinner lacks. Let no reader forget the simple meaning of justification. Some people have the idea that there is a much higher condition for the Christian to occupy than to be justified. That is to say, that there is a higher condition for one to occupy than to be clothed within and without with the righteousness of God. That can not be.(Waggoner on Romans)
Those who wait for the Bridegroom's coming are to say to the people, "Behold your God." The last rays of merciful light, the last message of mercy to be given to the world, is a revelation of His character of love.

It seems that what Waggoner considered justification is commonly called sanctification today.

Waggoner had a different conception of what "justification" means than the common view, but his idea of justification is not what people think sanctification is. There's lots of Waggoner on line. I'll provide a link to something discussing his view: http://www.nisbett.com/righteousness/chr/chr10.htmHere's a little taste: Notice in the above account that the taking away of the filthy garments is the same as causing the iniquity to pass from the person. And so we find that when Christ covers us with the robe of His own righteousness, He does not furnish a cloak for sin but takes the sin away. And this shows that the forgiveness of sins is something more than a mere form, something more than a mere entry in the books of record in heaven, to the effect that the sin has been cancelled. The forgiveness of sins is a reality; it is something tangible, something that vitally affects the individual. It actually clears him from guilt, and if he is cleared from guilt, is justified, made righteous, he has certainly undergone a radical change. He is, indeed, another person, for he obtained this righteousness for the remission of sins, in Christ. It was obtained only by putting on Christ. But "if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature." 2 Cor. 5:17. And so the full and free forgiveness of sins carries with it that wonderful and miraculous change known as the new birth, for a man cannot become a new creature except by a new birth. This is the same as having a new, or a clean, heart.
The new heart is a heart that loves righteousness and hates sin. It is a heart of willingness to be led into the paths of righteousness. It is such a heart as the Lord wished Israel to have when he said, "O that there were such a heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children forever!" Deut. 5:29. In short, it is a heart free from the love of sin as well as from the guilt of sin. But what makes a man sincerely desire the forgiveness of his sins? It is simply his hatred of them and his desire for righteousness, which hatred and desire have been kindled by the Holy Spirit.
Those who wait for the Bridegroom's coming are to say to the people, "Behold your God." The last rays of merciful light, the last message of mercy to be given to the world, is a revelation of His character of love.

Indeed, that quote describes something very different from the common understanding of justification. And I basically agree with it. But it is very similar to my understanding of sanctification. But there's something different in there. In short, it is a heart free from the love of sin as well as from the guilt of sin. But what makes a man sincerely desire the forgiveness of his sins? It is simply his hatred of them and his desire for righteousness, which hatred and desire have been kindled by the Holy Spirit. This implies that the justified person hates sin, and wants nothing to do with it. WDYT?
