That's right, Canada Post is not delivering any mail.
It's been six days now -- no mail. At first it didn't seem that much of a problem, postal service hasn't been what it used to be for several years now. Yet, as time continues and the postal service remains closed, it is becoming a big deal.
News reports that 85,000 people were expecting passports to arrive in the mail. Wow! Sounds like people were really planning to travel this winter (snowbirds) as the cold weather descends on Canada. Will they have to give up their trip to the sunny south and pay large carbon taxes, like the rest of us, in order to keep their houses warm.
Hey-- Christmas is just a little over a month away. No cards, no mail orders delivered, at least not by Canada Post. In larger communities people can turn to other transport companies BUT A lot of those transport companies tend to offer only very limited service to smaller rural communities.
Charity organizations, depend to a large extent, on people sending their donations in order to run their programs of feeding and sheltering disadvantaged citizens. Needed now that cold weather (and Christmas) is coming.
Small businesses that depend on online sales, especially in the two months prior to Christmas, are expecting huge loss of sales.
And will the mail that was already in the system when the strike began, ever get pulled out of storage and delivered?
Well, people are getting worried. But it's not the end of the world. Just a small worry, in the larger picture of world wide worries concerning the future.

Must be the cold weather hitting along with the snow....https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/weather/2024/11/21/snow-forecast-winter-storm-northeast/76474106007/

They are on strike clear across all of Canada for a full week already, with no promise of an end in sight.

If they were making low wages or facing great dangers or doing incredible work such as first responders, I could see that, but delivering mail pays very good, and the occasional rain or snow is the worst most see.

At least in the U.S. I believe postal workers in general make pretty good money. This may not be good for the postal system in Canada. This may be a time of innovation. With businesses standing to lose lots of money, they or someone else may create something that makes the postal service not needed.

The mail strike is still on. It's putting a damper on Christmas for many people, in many ways. As well as economic problems for business and services. Yes, the mail system needs overhauling. It is not what it used to be, and not up to what one would expect in our day and age. Can you imagine, no one in Canada has received mail by Canada post for almost a month now? Most other countries, like the US, won't even accept mail if it is addressed to Canada now. It will be a month this Friday. Hopefully they work something out soon. Even if they finally reach some agreement it will be ages before the system will get mail sorted out again. No guarantee that a lot of mail won't be lost.
I won't be surprised if it is a means to get people away from "hard copies" and force them to use computers for everything. Everything to be digitalized.

I have already seen one person switch from paper to online billing. It seems likely that tens of thousands, possibly more, people will be making the same change. Canada Post has lost 3 billion dollars in the last couple of years. They have lost another billion dollars during this strike. Taking this action during the Christmas season may not have been as smart as CUPW thought. What was it that Ellen White said about unions in the last days?
